Big updates from DivShare
The blog is back, and we’ve got some great announcements about the future of DivShare. Over the past two months, we’ve been building up our network of servers, working with new partners and investors, even turning down some big buyout offers. Today, we’ll start to unveil the new features and changes that will make DivShare the most powerful and professional media and document-sharing tool on the web in 2008.
If you’ve been using the site this week, you may already have noticed a big improvement in download and page load speed. That’s just the beginning of the server upgrades and new features we’ll be rolling out in the coming months. The first round of changes — all of which will make DivShare a faster, more stable site for all our users — will affect the storage and bandwidth allowances on user accounts.
From here on out, free users will get 5 GB of storage space and 50 GB of downloads (data transfer) per month. Premium users will be able to upgrade to as much as 10 times that amount — and take advantage of ad-free pages, hotlinking, FTP uploading and more. You can check out all the plans on the new signup page.
So, the big questions: why are we making this change, and who will this affect? We’ve mapped out the new plans so that less than 1 in 10 current users will need to upgrade. In fact, 99% of users use less than 5 GB of storage, and 90% of users serve less than 50 GB of downloads each month. We’re making the change because a very small group of users is using a very large amount of bandwidth and storage space, and by doing so is degrading the DivShare experience for the rest of our 250,000 members. The new system will keep our servers much faster and more reliable, and members with lots of popular files will still be able to take advantage of DivShare through one of our upgraded accounts.
The new tracking system will go live tonight, but we’ll have a week grace period during which no accounts will be affected if they go over their storage or download limits. On January 24, you’ll need to be below the storage limit to upload a new file, and you’ll need to be below the download limit to serve new downloads.
As always, we love to hear your comments and suggestions, and we’re here to help anyone who has questions about how the changes may affect them. We’ll be updating the blog non-stop from here on out with new features, upgrade announcements, partnership news and more.
Enjoy the faster, more reliable site, and drop us a line any time.
Update: To reiterate, no files will be deleted as part of this change. You can keep all the files currently in your account, even if it’s over the storage limit. However, you will not be able to upload new files until you upgrade or make some extra room. Also, if you’re using a lot of space but not a lot of bandwidth, we can set you up with a custom account — just drop us an e-mail from the Enterprise page.

What happens when you go over your limit?
January 17th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Oh my god, I’m like way way over my limit!~~ Does that I will have to move all my files somewhere… And my bandwidth is also over like 100+GB….
I hope things will just go back to the old times…
it’s causing more problems for me now!!~~
January 17th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
I am 25 Gigs over the limit but my bandwidth is hardly nothing. I have no idea what I’m going to do with those 20 gigs of files that I don’t want to delete.

Peachie and blush_response: No files have to be deleted if you’re over your free 5 GB of storage. Upgrading is fast and easy and starts at just a few bucks a month. And as what was said in the blog post, we’re doing this to ensure all users enjoy a fast and reliable service. As always, free free to drop us an email (support@divshare.com) with any of your questions. Thanks!

I just signed up less than 2 months ago under a totally different pretense, and now they want me to pay even more to upgrade? Rob knows that there has been nothing but problems with the service since I signed up, and I feel like I’m entitled to a full refund so I can get a premium account elsewhere. I feel totally ripped off. I need to take a week off from work so I can rescue all the files I’ve uploaded so far!!
January 18th, 2008 at 4:57 am
Too funny for words… really
I’ve been saying for ages that Divshare was going down the pan, and this just smacks of desperation. I guess the powers that be at Divshare couldn’t find a buyer and are trying to get cash this way.
The question is, why would I pay though? The whole Divshare hosting structure is flakey at best, and always slow. Even this morning the Divshare site was taking an age to come up.

Can’t even post on the blog… my previous entry “dissapeared”
January 18th, 2008 at 6:42 am
I’m shocked. Actually you force 10% of the users to upgrade or all files are deleted which were uploaded under legal conditions! And only 1 week to rescue the files??????
That isn’t surprising. Just another host that starts with unlimited offers to get known on the web, just to restrict the rules later… Very sad!
I won’t upgrade and never use your service again. That’s for sure.
You change the system to make the servers faster? Sorry, but real hosts buy new servers…
Your “premium” accounts are way too expensive on a low service.
50GB storage / 500 GB traffic / month 29$ / month. Now take megaupload:
250 GB storage / unlimited traffic / 117$ for 2 years or 290$ for lifetime.
I see it going down the river already, but good luck. It was nice but no more.

Wow…
How about a bandwidth usage graph to back up your claims? And how about targeting those heavy users? If that’s the problem, fix it that way; not by penalizing EVERYONE!
I am hurt. How about giving those LOYAL members who stuck with the service a break?!?! I know we don’t pay, and as a free service, I do not expect an iron-clad guarantee of reliability, but given the silent nature of these changes (except for a hint by Dave at Divshare support that “something” was in the works), I feel we should be allowed more than just a week. Or, these new rules should apply to any NEW signups. At this point, if we do not upgrade, our current files will stay up, but no one will be able to see them, nor will we be able to add new files!
I think it is truly unfair that we are being FORCED to upgrade now, and while the “Divshare Direct” service offers a benefit, I was looking for a proven track record of internal network robustness before I plunked down some coin! In reality, I DON’T think having more paid vs. free users on the service will help it, and if the server load does improve, that probably means more people followed Martin’s lead and DROPPED THE SERVICE rather than paying. Way to go, Divshare!
Because of this change, I am (we are) now forced to pay almost $180.00 to keep my 11.9GB of files online and “servable.” I could take everything off, but I have to finish out the wrestling season, and am using Divshare to host my team’s matches for analysis. The coach is NOT going to be too happy, especially since I promoted Divshare so highly and I thought at least we could finish out the season. Our files WOULD HAVE BEEN removed at the end of the season, to be replaced with new footage, so it’s not like the now-11GB of space would stay the same.
Meanwhile, I pay ONLY $89.95 per year to another file host - MediaMax, which offers 25GB OF FREE STORAGE SPACE, or 250GB of space, and 25GB of transfer per month, for $9.95 / month! The only benefit Divshare has over Mediamax is the Flash document conversion, and even that tends to be flaky at times. Don’t know what else to say, except that Divshare as we know it is truly dead, and I do NOT believe these lastest changes will resurrect it.

On Existing Files: No files will be deleted as a result of this change. If you’re over your storage limit, you won’t be able to upload new files, but those currently in your account will remain active.
January 18th, 2008 at 10:19 am
These are great news. I’m very comfortable with the new features, especially thanks for the extension of traffic and storage without any extra charge. Also I like the new display showing the current amount of traffic and usage as well. By the way, you should update the upload page too as it still shows the old values.
To be honest, I tried some other video hosting services like Sevenload, Reever, Multiply, Metacafe and so on in the last few days. But either they are full of ads, using some kind of portal to present all available clips or the whole service and/or user interface is just creepy. For this reason I really begin to admire Divshare. It has less ads (or no ads if you are paying for the service) and fresh, classy, clean interface. The encoding time has been improved and the video quality is always good.
In my point of view, there’s only one weak point at present and that’s the performance of the streams. If you can ensure a good bandwidth in future, you will become one of the best media hosting platforms for sure. Furthermore, in case the service will be stable in the near future, I will continue to pay for it as it’s a nice feature for my websites!

Martin i’m with you !!!
DivShare - it’s so disappointing !!!!
why you do this ?!
why no ask for donation ? and also the prices so expensive !!
i’m veteran user and a hundred of users come because of me and thousand of people enter you site….
and by the way, you can’t take money for very slow speed !
now i to be coerced to find another Files Host Service….
and 98% do like me….
it’s the start of the money and the finish to the success !
January 18th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Thank you for the updates.
The limits of free accounts are fair and DivShare services are excellent.
January 18th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
“On January 24, you’ll need to be below the storage limit to upload a new file, and you’ll need to be below the download limit to serve new downloads.”
Okay so nothing will be deleted and everything is still for DL and I just cannot upload new files?
Admins please be clear about the situation.
January 18th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Now they even banned me from posting LOL!!!!
Rob, where have you got this info from?
Dave said: “No files have to be deleted if you’re over your free 5 GB of storage. Upgrading is fast and easy and starts at just a few bucks a month.”
= Upgrade or files will be deleted on January 26.
I think you guys have a wrong strategy. You want to scare everyone away who uses webspace and causes traffic and force them to pay your slow service. Invest some time on a good ads-system instead!
Real hosts like rapidshare or megaupload solve it this way: The webspace problem is solved by 90 days w/o DL = deletion rules. The traffic problem is solved by showing ads on every page which results in more money for them than 1 download costs (No idea what you get for your always the same ads though). They also finance theirself with advanced accounts without limiting the bandwith (wtf!). You can even extend your advanced accounts of course but see my MegaUplaod offer from above + you can extend your account time by making points for every DL.
Same on uploaded.to + you can even make money with them by entering your own layer-ads ID so every layer shown on your file DL pages will give you a refund.
Now you come with your laughable new strategy by deleting peoples files to make your servers faster? And you call yourself “…the leader in professional document and media sharing.” Do I have to comment that?
January 18th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
summary of my post: with a good ads-system you’re happy when lot of bandwith is used cos you get more money for every DL or people pay an advanced account for not having to wait.

@Rob
I’m okay with not being able to upload new files since I am already way over my limit. No offense, but I have little interest in paying for your service as of yet because of Divshare’s poor track record. That’s not to say I won’t in the future. It would be a poor financial decision on my part.
I imagine you will be out of much luck by forcing some users into paying for their accounts.
I’m relying on most of my files in my account to still be there for the sake of my blog and portfolio.
After all, I’m just a poor starving college student.
I appreciate that files will not be deleted. Thank you for that. Please don’t change your mind on that. But if push comes to shove and you must change your mind. Please give us a shout a month in advance so we have time to make arrangements.
Thank you! I still love the idea of Divshare and hope it the best in the future.
January 18th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Thanks to everyone for all your feedback. We really do appreciate your support and your criticism, and take it all to heart when making decisions about the site.
I’ve updated the original article to be more clear about what will happen to users who are over their storage limit. You can keep all the files currently in your account. No files will be deleted. The only change is that you won’t be able to upload new files without upgrading. If you have any more questions, we’ll be here.
January 18th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Thank you for the clarification. If you ever change that rule, please give us an advance of at least 2 weeks. I don’t know what I would have done if it’s a week. 16 GB of files , I wouldn’t have time to download all those or find temporary storage for it in such a short time.
I’m glad that all files will stay on, even if you’re over your limit. I guess I won’t be able to upload for a while unless I upgrade for bigger storage space.

DivShare no longer unlimited
DivShare blog:
From here on out, free users will get 5 GB of storage space and 50 GB of downloads (data transfer) per month. Premium users will be able to upgrade to as much as 10 times that amount — and take advantage of ad-free pages, hotlinkin…
January 19th, 2008 at 11:25 am
THATS SUCK…..PRIMERO DICE ALGO Y DESPUES LO CAMBIAN….PERO LO MAS SEGURO ES QUE UDS SE VAN A IR ABAJO DESPUES DE ESTO
January 19th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
I’m very upset about the change, however, I realize things like this happen. I have way over the allowed space an can no longer uploaded without paying crazy prices… and even then upload little before I reach absolute limit..
I understand prices have to be higher because you do not have the same popularity as other hosts, however, I think this may have been a bad direction. Although most people using this site do not store a lot - those who do tend to be good paying customers and consistenly pay every month whereas customers that do not use much storage come and go. Perhaps this has to be fixed. I do not have the time to wait around for these things to fix or happen again. I’m in the process of moving all my media to Sendspace where it’s cheaper and your storage is unlimited. Thanks for the past good times though..
January 19th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
So, what happens to me that I’ve a premium account now?
I’ve paid an entire year two months ago.
January 20th, 2008 at 1:07 am
Unlimited sounds so promising at the beginning,i guess i’ll have to wait abit and see what will happen next.

I still have .4 G left after all.

Thanks for using DivShare. This is a reminder that you’ve used 100% of your account’s monthly download allowance. Your download tracking will renew on Feb. 16, 2008. Until then, your files will remain online, but no one will be able to view embedded media or start a new download. If you’d like to upgrade and start serving new files immediately, check out the options at http://www.divshare.com/members/upgrade.

January 27th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
I have no complaints about storage and bandwidth limit. However, the way you calculate the bandwidth is somewhat absurd. Why does it have to be that every time I click on a file, the bandwith immediately increase by the size of the file, regardless whether I have actually downloaded it or not. For example, just by simple clicking on the link to a 100 MB file, I lost 100 MB of bandwidth immediately.
I don’t think 50 GB / month for bandwidth is not enough, but the way it’s counted makes this 50 GB nothing at all. As said, I lost 1.3 GB for nothing.
January 28th, 2008 at 4:45 am
And it seems I can still download eventhough the bandwidth has reached its limit. Strange.
January 28th, 2008 at 10:21 am
UPGRADE! $$$! UPGRADE! $$$! oh i forgot, 50 GB bandwith is the max LOL
man for 50€ i get my own virtual private server with 50 GB storage and 4TB traffic per month. divshare is so crappy!!!!!!!!

you cocksuckers even cheat with the renewing tracking. before i deleted all my files from shit servers it read March 6th or something even before the old February 16th limit. i wish you no luck and all the worst that could happen to you.
