Our 2 millionth file, and DivShare upgrade news
We’re proud to announce that one lucky user has just uploaded DivShare’s 2 millionth file! It’s a great milestone for us, and with more than 137,000 registered users uploading 12,000 new files every day, there are a lot more big announcements in our future. We’re well on the way to settling down in new Silicon Valley offices, making big hardware improvements and launching a ton of cool new products and features. It’s been a great nine months so far, and the rest of the year will be even better.
On the upgrades front, we have been keeping close track of your comments, concerns and support questions this week as we ramp up our network of servers to handle DivShare’s ever-growing traffic. We agree with you — reliability and speed are of the utmost importance to our service, and we’re working hard to bring all of our current servers up to speed (and keep them there). The server upgrades will not be an overnight process, but we’ve already added a number of new machines and will be making huge improvements to our network over the next few weeks. This will allow us to handle not just our usual traffic growth, but the surges that we expect in the near future.
In the meantime, we’ve improved the preparation of our datacenter staff to immediately handle any speed or accessibility problems that occur on any of our servers, so these issues will be fixed quickly and with minimal downtime. We know how important it is that you have access to your files and media at all times, and we’re working night and day to ensure that you do.
Hit us up at support@divshare.com with any questions, and keep those comments coming — we always love hearing from you. Stay tuned for more updates on our server upgrades and our adventures in California. Have a great night!

I have a suggestion for another new feature, but it’s probably a big ask. It would be great to have FTP uploading so I could use my own client to upload. Regards, tino.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:23 am
Oh, and congrats to you for becoming a successful file host, and for keeping on adding improvements!
September 19th, 2007 at 2:46 am
tino - there is already FTP uploading if you become a Direct paying user.
BUT currently it is pretty useless because the file strucure is stripped out from the FTP page so whole folders cannot be put straight onto divShare - and just currently it is virtually impossible to move files at all from FTP page to divShare proper - I’ve had to do it one or two files at a time - and often even that wouldn’t work.
So if I were you I wouldn’t part with any money until all these issues of reliability and speed have been properly addressed.
divShare is STILL potentially great - but it certainly isn’t at the moment.

I am Really happy for You guys..
really good work .
let this good work have more new features added to it..
all the best Divy…

I am a little puzzled.
If there are 137,000 registered users and two million files that is only 15 files approx per user - even less presumably when one allows for uploaded files by non-regsitered users.
I certainly would have expected more.
I am simply posting to register my surprise at how little each registered user has made use of divShare (on average) given the facility to upload “unlimited” files!

can you add the icon for .docx files?

hi thanks for excelent work divshre team…
I have a suggestion for another new feature, a tool to resume failed uploads… it could be useful…
thanks for your work

Another feature request. The ability to limit the speed of uploading.
September 20th, 2007 at 9:21 am
I’m very pleased the DivShare team has finally come to terms with the fact that stability issues are more crucial than adding new features. Thanks for listening to your users!
September 21st, 2007 at 2:18 am
A good feature, is in regards with both power uploader and normal web uploader, that when uploading multiple files, and just say the browser crashes, or your site crashes that at least some of the files which have allready completed their upload remain uploaded.
eg, upload a hundred photos, 80 go through, 20 left, browser freezes, all 80 have been lost, have to start all over again - really annoying
September 21st, 2007 at 8:25 am
i just uploaded 134 mb worth of files on the power uploader to find out that at the end of it there was an error and a directory could not be created, and it was all lost!
September 21st, 2007 at 8:30 am
photos wont upload
Error
• Error creating thumbnail directories.
September 22nd, 2007 at 4:47 am
Woah, great news. I think divshare still has some stability issues though, but still I’m pretty damn satisfied with your services. Carry on the good work.
September 22nd, 2007 at 6:50 pm
it would be really great if the java uploader didn’t needed user interaction at the end to confirm the upload because if i’m not at the computer at the time the session might expire and the files get lost. it happens very often, at least to me
September 23rd, 2007 at 11:00 am
Congratulations!!!
Many thanks for your work
September 24th, 2007 at 2:26 am
sometimes , the download speed become slow slow slow about 5KB/s
September 25th, 2007 at 2:26 am
Upload currently doesn’t work for me at all. No matter whether it’s an image or an mp3, no matter whether I use tha Java or form based uploader, no matter whether or not the file name contains blanks — in the end, the system will just say that the folder could not be created, and one to two more error messages in a red box.
As many others, I’m happy this service exists. But neither videos nor mp3s can always be streamed in real time by divShare — why add a playlist feature?
Plus, the photo gallery thing doesn’t seem to be stable as well.
Upload bandwidth is indeed exciting. But I experience downtimes of divShare weekly. (When it’s night at your end.)
Please fix the basics first. I know the playlist feature is being requested for quite some time now. Still, I’m having trouble with the availability istself.
September 25th, 2007 at 7:14 am
the last week it seems to be orite u guys havent gone down once, thats good, keep the speed up, also linkable folders would still be loved
September 25th, 2007 at 1:33 pm
Hi Divshare. I’m a paying customer and have just come back to the site after some time. I signed up in the early days and was told that Download Managers would be supported “very soon”. That was quite a few months ago. When will I be able to use a download manager?
Thanx
Colin

September 26th, 2007 at 4:46 am
to Jeremy - aha, thanks for telling me about http://FTP. I’ve never known about that feature as its not listed on the page where you sign up to Divshare Direct.
Funny that you say files uploaded to direct can’t also be made to appear on DivShare proper, for me that would be the whole point! Pity thats not working yet. I always prefer FTP upload since its more stable and resumes itself when interrupted.
Another feature that would be cool that a lot of newer sites are starting to have is URL upload, very useful for transferring files between file hosts because it’s much faster than reuploading yourself (usually 2MB to 10MB per second).
that’s enough suggestions from me lol.
September 26th, 2007 at 5:12 am
second for URL uploads!
Thanks for this site! excellent work
bye

September 26th, 2007 at 11:52 am
Hi Tino -
I probably didn’t express myself too well! You certainly can transfer from FTP page to Dashboard when divShare is working properly - the problem is that a lot of the time it isn’t working properly!
Also all files on FTP page are in one long list - no folders even if you sent them as folders. This means that you have to manually find all the appropriate files for each folder from what can be a long mixed up list of files during transfer over to the Dashboard. This can be a convoluted and time consuming process since every single file has to be individually checked (or unchecked). If only the folder structure were visible it would be easy - assuming it was working of course.
The above means that in practice it is easier to use the Drag-and-drop uploader since the folder can be formed at the time of starting the upload. Problem is though that (as many have pointed out) this too is very prone to failure, and every time it fails ALL files are lost, even the ones which have already uploaded.
Overall not a good scenario at the moment - let’s hope for much improvement - on “resumability”, usability, reliability and speed!
September 27th, 2007 at 4:05 am
Jeremy - I second your comments. Reliability and speed are absolutely vital. Which is why we need download managers. Divshare seems to be falling behind nowadays. What a pity!
September 28th, 2007 at 9:59 am
There are problems uploading today, it’s taking forever, much longer than it usually does. Are you having traffic issues?
I also would like to be able to put folders inside folders. That would be a great feature to have.
Anisah
September 29th, 2007 at 4:28 am
a download manager and resumable uploads would be a great added feature.
September 29th, 2007 at 5:38 pm
Here’s a thought: It would be very convenient to load a file from another website, rather than from my hard drive. What a waste of resources it is to download a file to my drive only to have to upload it to your site. Why not go direct from a website to you and cut out the middle-man !?!
Thanks for your great service!
Dan

Nice idea, but having used the system for a couple of days I’m not sure I would entrust anything of importance to it. System seemed unresponsive and unreachable a few times yesterday, and today it seems impossible to delete a file. Maybe a bit too early to entrust all my files to Divshare yet
October 1st, 2007 at 2:49 am
Interesting idea danny ………. in similar vein, I would like to be able to copy files that I have already uploaded to divShare directly over to another site, rather than re-uploading them there. I know I can post links etc to my files on other sites - but is there any way I can copy over to, say Phanfare, a whole folder of files from divShare. Is that something that should be able to be accomplished with FTP? Of course one couldn’t do it from ones divShare FTP page anyway since as soon as one gets them onto the dashboard, they are no longer visible on the FTP page.
October 1st, 2007 at 4:29 am
Although it would be good if the core functionality was sorted out first. I still can’t delete files, which seems something of an over site for a file sharing app.
October 1st, 2007 at 4:57 am
Sites running awfully slow.
@ dan you can delete files, go to your dashboard select the file using the check box go to the top right go into the drop down menu and tada!
October 1st, 2007 at 5:54 am
@ Fabio
Yep, that is what I did, and guess what, tada, the file is still there!
October 1st, 2007 at 5:02 pm
I do think the stability of the site needs to be looked at before any other features are added. I have a lot of files uploaded that i use in my website, and its annoying when i find they arent showing because DivShare has died, usualy for hours at a time.
At the moment im a free user, and while i would move to paid, at the minute i wont because it isnt stable enough. Should the system become more stable, and not die every few days, i’ll be more than happy to pay a subscription fee.
October 1st, 2007 at 6:27 pm
@dan does any error messages come up, or anything?
October 2nd, 2007 at 1:29 am
@ Fabio
No error message, the system just sits there doing nothing. Not sure, but is the delete and move function an ajax based thing, if so, I guess the server is not responding because it is timing out.
I’ve removed all y files at the moment though, because, I think if Divshare is even going to remotely exist as an online file storage site, then it has to be high availability, something it is clearly not!
As Tiamat says, I would not pay for this, and as a business model, and if I owned the site, I would be worried.
So many apps like to advertise they are Beta, but if you want to retain credibility, then do your beta testing in private

Hey Dan, sorry for the deletion errors you’re experiencing. When you have a minute, please send us the e-mail address of your DivShare account and any links to the files you were having a problem deleting — support@divshare.com. There’s no overall problem with deletion on the site, so these details will help us pinpoint the exact cause of the problem.
On the general issue of stability, we’ve gotten a lot of upgrades finished over the past two weeks, and you should be noticing improved speeds and uptime. This is our top priority on the server side right now, and we’re also hard at work on some new features — keep an eye on the blog for more news this week.
October 2nd, 2007 at 2:22 am
Hi Rob,
Thanks for your reply, but I’m afraid I can’t send you the links as I’ve now removed all my files from DivShare. Thanks anyway.
October 2nd, 2007 at 2:29 am
At one time I was having exactly the same issue experiencing inability to delete files. Most often these were actually incomplete or faulty files - files which had appeared in the dashboard at the point that transfer over from FTP page had failed part way through a file. When I subsequently successfully transferred the complete file over that left a proper version and a truncated version both showing on the dashboard (with identical filenames). One would generate a thumbnail, the other would not (being incomplete). When I tried to delete the faulty file nothing would happen, so I resorted to moving the files to a “bin” folder which I created where they would not interfere with the intended folder. Moving seemed to work where deletion would not!

tino - I didn’t realise before that you said in an earlier post that some file hosts do give the ability to copy files directly over to other file hosts. Any chance you could elaborate - either here or perhaps you could e-mail me at jeremyparkin@orange.fr
October 2nd, 2007 at 4:56 pm
Ok nota 1000
October 3rd, 2007 at 1:31 am
Still keep getting an intermittent “Connection Timed Out Error”
October 3rd, 2007 at 10:06 pm
Just a thought, but it might be a good idea to move your blog to a seperate server. That way if the main one goes down (as it still does) you can keep people informed of whats going on. It’s also a good idea to keep users informed, since when it goes down for hours on end, users get fed up with having nop information on whats happening and will move elsewhere
October 4th, 2007 at 10:03 am
Is there any way to close my account. Is it just an email to support?

October 5th, 2007 at 5:33 am
Jeremy: Mediafire are very good. Apparently, they’ll shortly be offering a Premium service with bigger uploads and an upload manager
RS and megaupload also allow remote file fetching from other sites.
October 5th, 2007 at 12:06 pm
Thanks JonD - my particular interest was in “URL uploading” (copying files directly over from one file host to another without re-uploading). I must be being very thick because I still don’t see how one accomplishes that with Mediafire. For example say I had a folder of files on Mediafire and wanted to copy whole folder of files directly over to divShare - could that be done?
As these comments are in divShares blog - I would just like to say that I still think divShare has the most useful features, so will be best file host once speed and reliability issues are sorted!

Quick update to let everyone know that we’ve been working hard to get everything up to par. Our infrastructure is now bigger and better than ever.
For any individual site related problems, please email us at support@divshare.com and we can take care of the issue immediately.
In the meantime, we have a lot on the horizon, and I want to thank each and every one of our users for their continued support as traffic continues to grow faster than ever. Please email us with any questions or comments, and have a great day,
Dave / DivShare
October 7th, 2007 at 5:04 am
Jeremy: sorry, I thought I remembered MF having a URL upload service. RS and MU certainly do. And so does filefactory.
Of course, these are only one-way services (i.e., you can load a remote file onto their servers).
Divshare don’t have a URL upload service (yet!). I suppose you could try some kind of FTP site-to-site transfer if you are a Premium divshare member.
October 8th, 2007 at 11:13 am
I also have a new future in mind i hope i don’t ask much but can you mybe make the upload limit to 300MB instead of 200MB?
October 12th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
[…] DivShare is growing at an almost alarming pace, and they have more than 137,000 registered users uploading 12,000 new files each day. There are over 2 million files being hosted on their servers, and I can only imagine what their bandwidth costs are like! Their Alexa graph shows no sign of them slowing down anytime soon: […]

I second the suggestion for the feature of resumable downloads… People with really crappy internet connection (like me) have a really hard time completing certain downloads, so it’ll be really helpful if we can resume failed/interrupted downloads.
