Our 2 millionth file, and DivShare upgrade news

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

We’re proud to announce that one lucky user has just uploaded DivShare’s 2 millionth file! It’s a great milestone for us, and with more than 137,000 registered users uploading 12,000 new files every day, there are a lot more big announcements in our future. We’re well on the way to settling down in new Silicon Valley offices, making big hardware improvements and launching a ton of cool new products and features. It’s been a great nine months so far, and the rest of the year will be even better.

On the upgrades front, we have been keeping close track of your comments, concerns and support questions this week as we ramp up our network of servers to handle DivShare’s ever-growing traffic. We agree with you — reliability and speed are of the utmost importance to our service, and we’re working hard to bring all of our current servers up to speed (and keep them there). The server upgrades will not be an overnight process, but we’ve already added a number of new machines and will be making huge improvements to our network over the next few weeks. This will allow us to handle not just our usual traffic growth, but the surges that we expect in the near future.

In the meantime, we’ve improved the preparation of our datacenter staff to immediately handle any speed or accessibility problems that occur on any of our servers, so these issues will be fixed quickly and with minimal downtime. We know how important it is that you have access to your files and media at all times, and we’re working night and day to ensure that you do.

Hit us up at support@divshare.com with any questions, and keep those comments coming — we always love hearing from you. Stay tuned for more updates on our server upgrades and our adventures in California. Have a great night!

A file-naming tweak to allow spaces

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Here’s a quick tweak that we’re sure some of you will enjoy — we’ve turned off the part of our software that turns spaces in your file names into underscores. It’s been requested by a number of users, and should make your file names just that much more aesthetically pleasing. We’re also expecting our audio playlist feature to be ready in the next 48 hours or so, so stay tuned. Enjoy!

Our apologies for this week’s downtime (Sept. 8)

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

DivShare has been growing fast — so fast that our traffic outpaced our ability to add new servers and keep the site running as smoothly as it always has. Unfortunately, this meant some significant errors and downtime over the past week as we’ve been bringing in new servers, switching our software configurations, and generally putting out the fires associated with a big move. We did it all in a haphazard way that caused far too many of our users to lose access to the site and their files for many hours. For that, we’re sorry.

We want to level with you because we value all of you — all 130,000 registered users and the millions who visit the site every month — and take pride in providing you with one of the web’s best media-sharing tools. It breaks our hearts to see you unable to use the service, and we’ll be working around the clock this weekend to ensure not only that the site is running fast, but that we don’t run into any problems of this magnitude as we continue to grow.

So, as we come off a rough week and get ready to take the next step in our expansion, here are the latest updates on our plans for DivShare. Number 1, we’re not going anywhere. Despite the recent problems, we’re in it for the long haul and have the funding and business model to really rock the hosting and sharing industry. Second, we’re making it a priority to increase our server capacity ahead of any potential problems, which means episodes like this week’s will be a thing of the past. Finally, we’ll soon be settling into new offices and bringing on some new partners that will allow us grow the business in a huge way, helping us to provide even better products and services for you.

Now that things are cooling down with our servers, we’ll be focusing on those long-promised Flash upgrades, particularly the audio playlists and the embeddable Flash uploader. We’ll be making sure everything is up to snuff on the hardware side this weekend, and should have those new features ready to roll next week.

Drop us an e-mail with any questions. And, as always, thanks so much for being a part of DivShare and helping us grow.

Tuesday’s maintenance and upgrade news

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

This week’s upgrades are progressing nicely, and we’ve just rolled out our new server software that has the site running much faster and more efficiently than it has been over the past few days. We’re still working out a couple issues, including short session times, so you may find yourself accidentally logged out during an upload or regular usage of the site. If you get logged out during an upload, logging back in will automatically add your files to your account.

Thanks for bearing with us on all these upgrades — the end result will be a much faster and more powerful DivShare. If you run into any errors, please let us know at support@divshare.com. The core DivShare team will be headed out to our new west coast HQ tomorrow, so wish us luck and enjoy the upgraded site.

Labor Day upgrades and downtime

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

Update: On Tuesday morning, we’ll be doing one last software change on our new server setup. In the meantime, you may experience some problems with your login sessions expiring — we recommend using the “remember me” function to ensure that your session sticks. As always, drop us a line at support@divshare.com with any specific error reports, and watch out for those upgrades tomorrow. Have a great night!

Hey everyone, thanks as always for being a part of DivShare. Today we rolled out some new servers, which will mean a much faster and more reliable DivShare experience. Unfortunately we ran into some problems with a change to our nameservers, which identify the DivShare servers when you type in “divshare.com”, which caused an outage for many users for much of the day. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience, and we’ll be working for the rest of the night to continue to increase site performance and ensure that we don’t have any more downtime.

If you have any questions, let us know at support@divshare.com. Sorry again for the inconvenience today, and stay tuned for more new features and upgrades. For our American users, enjoy the rest of your long weekend!
