Your galleries are beautiful slideshows, too

Monday, April 30th, 2007

As we mentioned in our latest post about the new download page, we’ve just introduced a great new feature — sleek, professional Flash slideshows for your image galleries. You can view your slideshows on DivShare by following the link from your regular image download pages, and you can also grab some embed code and add a customized slideshow to your site, blog or profile. Here’s how:

Hit up your download page for any image in a gallery, and click on the new “View Slideshow” link just below the image. You’ll be taken to a page that shows you the Flash gallery, just like this one. You can link directly to this slideshow, and if you want to add it to your site, just copy and paste the embed code you’ll find right below the slideshow. Here’s an example of an embedded gallery:

Pretty cool! And, of course, DivShare is all about freedom, so we allow you to make some changes to your code to match the design of your site. In addition to changing the size of your slideshow, you can change the text and background color. Just find the following options in the two places they appear in your embed code, and change the colors to whatever hexadecimal color you want to use.

Change these — myTextColor=00ff00&myBgColor=000000 — and you’ll get a different take on the same slideshow:

Truly a better way than ever to share your photos. Let us know what you think in the comments, and show us some places you’re using the new Flash slideshows on your own sites. We’ll have plenty more features on the way this week, so stay tuned!

The New Download Page

Monday, April 30th, 2007

Another day, another big DivShare upgrade. We’ve redesigned the download page and added a ton of great new features, including comments, better gallery navigation, and embeddable Flash slideshows. Here’s a list of all the new stuff — we’ll go into more detail on the slideshows in the next post.

Comments
The much-requested commenting feature is here, allowing any DivShare user to post their feedback on their favorite DS files. We’re really excited about getting more interaction between users, as well as bringing more people who are viewing and downloading files into the DivShare community. As the owner of a file, you can delete any comments you want, and if you post a comment you’ll be able to remove it at any time. Likewise, you can turn off comments for your files altogether from your My Account page.

Easier Sharing Options
We’ve made the sharing options — including links, embed code and the other HTML that lets you add files to your own site — a lot simpler and more prominent on the page, and for embeddable videos, audio and slideshows, we’ve also put the code right below the file for easy access.

“View Full Image” Mode
We automatically resize images for faster downloads and easier display on the download page, but until now you had to download the full-size image to view it. We’ve fixed that by adding a “View Full Image” option to any file that’s been sized down. Check out a full-size example, and then its regular-size counterpart.

Improved Gallery Navigation
We’ve always let you browse the thumbnails of all the images in a gallery, but for large galleries, that could mean increased load time and a long list of images to choose from. We’ve made some changes to provide a much sleeker interface, which shows four images at a time and allows you to scroll through the rest without ever leaving the page.

Flash Slideshows!
This is an awesome addition that we’ve been working on for a while now — not only do we produce a sleek Flash slideshow for all your image galleries, but you can also embed it on your site, profile or blog with a few lines of HTML! There are plenty more details in this post, but check out an example right here.

Enjoy the upgrades, and go crazy with those comments :). Have a great night!

DivShare Pro: FTP Uploads, Files up to 2 GB each!

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

We’ve been rolling out a ton of cool features, and we’ve got a lot more in store for you over the coming weeks. Today, we’ve got a big announcement — we’re proud to launch DivShare Pro, the premium plan that makes DivShare more powerful than ever. As with every new feature, Pro is all about freedom and simplicity.

We’ve got two payment plans to fit everyone’s style, and DivShare Pro is all about adding new features — everything that’s already free will stay that way. The Pro package comes with these huge upgrades:

FTP Uploads
A lot of our power users have requested FTP uploads, and now it’s a reality. Every Pro user gets his or her own unique FTP login, and you can upload all your files with your favorite FTP client and then add them to your DivShare account with a single click.

Files up to 2 GB each
Yes, that’s 10 times our current maximum file size! With the DivShare Pro subscription plan, you can share and store unlimited files up to 2 GB each, and with the flexible pay-per-file plan, you can pay just 99¢ a file to send anything up to 2 gigs. (More on that below.)

Unlimited Files with the Power Uploader
With the Pro subscription, you’ll be able to upload as many files as you can pack into the Power Uploader, making a great solution for uploading big image galleries, entire folders of documents or files, and every other job that’s far too big to pick your files 5 or 10 at a time.

And just like everyone at DivShare, our Pro users enjoy unlimited downloads, files that stay online forever (no expiration, ever!), easy image galleries and Flash video, and, of course, no pop-up ads or spam. It’s an amazing deal, and it’s about to get even better. Check out the affordable, flexible pricing:

Pay As You Go: 99¢ per file

Why commit to a monthly fee when you only need to send a couple files at a time? Everyone can take advantage of our pay-per-file plan — there’s no risk, no commitment, and it doesn’t get any cheaper. You get FTP access, 2 GB file size, unlimited downloads and no expiration for your file.

Subscribe: $9.95 per month

If you want to hit the big time, we offer another unbeatable price — less than 10 bucks a month for unlimited 2 GB uploads, FTP access, unlimited files in the Power Uploader, and, of course, unlimited downloads and files that stay online forever.

In the world of personal web hosting, it doesn’t get better than this. Grabbing your own DivShare Pro account is just a few clicks away — get started on the order page now. To learn more about all the new features, read on past the jump.

Scheduled Maintenance: 2:30 AM EST Tonight

Friday, April 20th, 2007

As part of our expansion to get ready to offer some new premium services, including FTP uploads, we are taking the main server offline for some upgrades tonight, starting around 2:30 AM Eastern Time and lasting for about an hour. This will affect the whole site, so you won’t be able to get online or access your files during this period. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we’ll make sure that the downtime is kept to an absolute minimum. Watch out for tons of new stuff over the weekend and all next week!

Update: Wow, only a minute or two of downtime and we’re all set. Thanks for your patience!

Autoplay Your DivShare MP3s

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Since we launched it back in January, the DivShare MP3 player has been one of our most popular features. It allows you to upload your music or podcasts and embed them right into your web site or blog for easy listening. It’s even been picked up by the sportswriters at the Houston Chronicle as a quick way to post audio of interviews!

One of our most requested upgrades is an “autoplay” feature, so that the MP3 loads immediately when you visit the page. So we just rolled out an upgrade that allows you to add a snippet of code to make it happen. All you have to do is add &autoplay=true at two spots in your embed. The change is highlighted in the code below (you may have to scroll to see it).

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" width="340" height="60" id="divmp3"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /><param name="movie" value="http://www.divshare.com/flash/divmp3.swf" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="flashVars" value="myFile=http://apollo.divshare.com/files/2007/01/29/84154/Keith_Ward_-_E._25th.mp3&myTitle=Keith_Ward_-_E._25...&myLink=http://www.divshare.com/download/84154-926&autoplay=true“><param name=”bgcolor” value=”#ffffff” /><embed src=”http://www.divshare.com/flash/divmp3.swf” bgcolor=”#ffffff” width=”340″ height=”60″ name=”divmp3″ allowScriptAccess=”sameDomain” wmode=”transparent” flashVars=”myFile=http://apollo.divshare.com/files/2007/01/29/84154/Keith_Ward_-_E._25th.mp3&myTitle=Keith_Ward_-_E._25…&myLink=http://www.divshare.com/download/84154-926&autoplay=true” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” pluginspage=”http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer”></embed></object>

I’ve updated my old MP3 post to show the new autoplay feature in action — check it out here.

So just add the autoplay command in those two spots, and you’re good to go! We have also reduced the length of the embed code a little, and in the next few days we are going to release much better versions that really minimize the length of the code and increase flexibility. In the world of Flash, we’re also about to release our new video player design and a Flash photo gallery that you can add to your pages or profiles. Let us know what you think about the autoplay feature, and stay tuned!

Uploading with Power

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

If you haven’t noticed, we love new features. We’ve got a lot more on tap this week, but tonight we’re happy to release a huge one — the DivShare Power Uploader. Never again will you have to scour your computer for files using the “Browse” button — this sweet new uploading tool provides a visual, drag-and-drop interface that includes a folder tree, file previews, and everything else you need for the perfect upload.

Give it a shot by heading over to the Power Upload page. Your browser will prompt you to give the Uploader permission to run on your computer — there are more detailed instructions on the page itself, but, like everything around here, it’s a pretty simple process. If you don’t have one yet, you’ll also need a DivShare account (signing up is fast and free). In the meantime, here’s a screenshot of the Uploader in action, and you can learn more about the application itself below.

The uploader is a Java Applet and ActiveX Control that provides an awesome interface between your hard drive and DivShare. All your local files will appear on the left, in the same tree format you’d see in “My Computer” or anywhere else you’re surfing through your files. On the right, you’ll see all the files in your selected directory, including thumbnails for your images so you can easily see which photos you’re uploading from a big batch with similar file names. Just like on your local computer, you can change the view to display thumbnails, icons, a file list or all your file details. Once you pick your files — you can upload as many as 10 at a time, double the regular upload form — just click “Add” to put them on your upload list, then send them to DivShare with the big “Upload” button. A fancy progress bar will tell you how much time is left and which file is being sent, and you’re done!

The rest of the process goes just like your standard DivShare upload. And, if you play around a little, you’ll also find that the Power Uploader has great support for resuming a canceled or broken upload — that reduces your wait time in a big way if something goes wrong. We love the new tool, and we’ve already made the switch to full-time Power users :). We’ve also added an option on your My Account page that allows you to set the Power Uploader as your default upload style.

As always, we want to hear all your ideas, suggestions and error reports — just post them in the comments below. More to come this week: premium FTP access and huge file sizes, embeddable Flash image galleries, and a new design for our Flash video player. Comment away!

Video Update: Roll Your Own Flash Video

Monday, April 16th, 2007

The power behind our new video feature is that we automatically convert all your videos to the versatile Flash Video format. But if you already have Flash Video files, just upload those to DivShare and we’ll automatically insert them in our video player, giving you easy access to watch your vids on the download page or embed them into your own site. Enjoy!

Video Update: Full-Screen Goes Live

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Cool new feature for ya — after hacking our way through some Internet Explorer issues, we’ve officially rolled out the full-screen feature of the DivShare Video Player. Check it out in this embed:

In the next week, we’ll be releasing a much cleaner version of the embed code, as well as a redesigned Flash player that hits on one of DivShare’s core principles — simplicity. Here’s a preview:

Also to come this week: Beautiful Flash image galleries to embed on your site, an MP3 autoplay feature for our embeddable player, and big news about increased file sizes and new uploading tools, some of which will be part of the new DivShare Pro premium plan. Stay tuned!

Introducing DivShare Video

Friday, April 13th, 2007

It’s time for another big upgrade — today we’re proud to launch DivShare Video. Every video you upload to the site will now be converted to a quick, convenient Flash video that you can watch directly from the download page or embed on your own blog, web site or profile. We’ve loaded DivShare Video with a lot of cool features — here’s a quick list:

Download your original video
We’re a file host at heart, so you will always have access to your original video file in addition to your new Flash video.

Huge, high quality vids
We encode your videos at high quality and display them at a width of 560 pixels, making them bigger and badder than most other videos on the web.

The easiest uploads around
There’s no extra work involved in creating your Flash videos — just upload the file to DivShare, and we’ll recognize it as a video that fits our specs. The system will automatically start the conversion, and you’ll get an e-mail (as well as see it on the download page) when it’s done!

Anonymous uploads, 200 MB file size, and all the DivShare standards
Your videos will enjoy the same freedoms as all your other DivShare files — there’s no video time limit, and you can upload any source video up to 200 MB in size. And, of course, you can upload and create a Flash video without even registering for an account.

We’ll go into more detail about converting your current vids and fill you in on a few things we’re still working on during this weekend’s Beta test. But first, get started by checking out this sample vid:

DivShare In Action: The Houston Chronicle

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

We always love to see DivShare put to great use at web sites and media outlets around the world. Some of our friends from a past life in the newspaper industry just linked us to the Houston Chronicle’s Baseball blog, which uses the DivShare MP3 player to post interviews. Rock on!

By the way, we have a big surprise for you planned for Friday. Stay tuned!
