divShare Gets a Makeover!

Friday, June 19th, 2009

As you have probably noticed (unless you’re somehow using divShare on a 16 color VGA screen), the entire look of the divShare site has been updated.  We hope you like the new colors, logo, etc., but the most exciting changes are still on the way!  We want to make this the easiest way to share, post, and store all of your important files on the Internet.

Don’t keep your only copy of priceless photos, videos, and work files on your hard drive–back them up quickly and easily to your divShare account!  Never lose a photo, never bounce an email, and never share a broken link!

We hope you like the changes we’re making, and please know we’ll never stop improving your divShare experience!

Introducing DivShare version 3.0

Friday, July 11th, 2008

You may have noticed the site evolving over the past couple months. We’ve thrown up a new front page, expanded the width and cleaned up download pages, and now we’re introducing the third evolution of the member dashboard.

In addition to a new layout and design, we’ve also added new functionality based on user feedback we’ve received over the past year. It’s now easier to move files in and out of folders - select the files you want to move, click the move link, then just click the folder you’d like to move it to, or for those of you with a lot of folders, you can find a folder fast by searching for the folder name. We’ve also added the ability to create sub-folders, one of our most requested features. This has been on our development list for awhile and we’re finally integrating it into the new dash. Just like you would on your desktop, you can create a new folder under any other folder, or in your root “all files” directory in a click.

Another highly requested feature is the ability to organize the order of tracks in a playlist or photos in a slideshow. You can now organize both of those, as well as any folder! While in organize mode, simply drag the file you wish to any order in the folder, and that’s the order it will appear in on the download/streaming page.

You’ll also notice new sharing options for linking to your folders and slideshows. You can now link directly to any folder page, which lists all the files in that folder, but doesn’t display any particular file like it did previously when you linked to a file in a folder. The sharing link for folders looks like www.divshare.com/folder/123-abc and can be found under sharing options. Similarly, you can link directly to slideshows by using the “gallery” sharing link.

Finally, as a thank you to all our members, we’re running a promotion this week for 20% off premium plans for all current members. Remove all advertising from the site and download faster for under $1 a month, or brand your Flash video, audio and slideshow players and increase your storage with DivShare Professional. Current users can take advantage of this deal and upgrade by visiting the upgrade page.

We welcome your feedback and questions - simply drop us a line at support@divshare.com. Look forward to more updates and blog posts soon, and have a great day!

New “share” dialogs and FAQ page

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

This week we’ll be rolling out a lot of new upgrades to our user interface and tech support system. For starters, we’ve redesigned the “share this file” dialog that you see on your dashboard and download pages. The sharing options for each file will now pop up in a sleek new dialog box, and you’ll easily be able to copy the appropriate code snippet for use on your own site. Here’s an example:

Try it out for yourself on any download page and on your dash. The second upgrade we’re announcing today is a new Frequently Asked Questions page, which now covers much more about Flash players, storage and bandwidth tracking and a number of other general questions. Tomorrow we’ll also be launching our new support ticket system, which will further improve customer support for users who run into site errors. And we’ve got plenty more on the agenda this week, including more dashboard upgrades and a new release of our popular Wordpress plugin. Enjoy!

Projects: The new, useful Facebook app

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Today we’re proud to introduce our new Facebook application, Projects. It’s a project-management system built right into Facebook that allows you to share your documents and media with friends inside invitation-only projects. We like to call it the one of the first useful Facebook apps — not that we don’t like Pirates vs. Ninjas. It’s a great way to collaborate with classmates and co-workers who are already your Facebook friends, and to easily keep all your notes, documents, images and other files in one safe place.

We’ve also created a quick screenshot tour that sheds some more light on the process of creating a project, inviting your friends and sharing your files (and wall posts) once you’ve got things going. Another great feature — our Flash documents, video and audio are fully supported, so you can view all those files right on the Facebook page. Enjoy!

New video player design

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

Last night we launched a new design for our embedded video player, providing both a graphical overhaul and some new customization options. The new player allows you to switch between an “overlay” and “static” progress bar — you can make the choice by clicking the new “customize” link under the embed code on the video’s download page. Here are some examples of the new styles:

Overlay (default):

Static:

Current embeds will still display in the old player, because the old embed code isn’t perfectly backwards compatible with the new player. If you want to update any of your videos, just head to the download page and grab the new code. We’re also launching the Flash MP3 playlist and a new Facebook app shortly. Enjoy!

The DivShare iPhone App

Friday, October 12th, 2007

If you’re lucky enough to have an iPhone, we’ve got some great news. You can now access your DivShare dashboard through our specially designed iPhone interface, available at www.divshare.com/iphone. It’s a great way to keep your files with you wherever you go — you can search your files, download any file in your account and quickly e-mail any file to your friends and colleagues.

We’re also launching our API next week, which will allow you to develop your own apps on top of the DivShare platform. If you’re interested in trying it prior to the official launch, request the Beta client and we’ll hook you up right away.

Brand new slideshow design

Friday, July 13th, 2007

Today we’re proud to release the sleek, sexy new Flash slideshow design, which we’ve been working on and plugging here on the blog over the past couple weeks. The new design allows the image to take up the entire space of the embed, and adds a sleek navigation system and some cool controls that appear only when you hover over the embed. It also includes an “autoplay” button, which allows your viewers to watch the slideshow roll without clicking to see each new image. Check it out:

This player will automatically replace your old ones, so you won’t have to make any changes to your code. Don’t forget that there’s a free month of DivShare Direct for all new upgrades this weekend, and leave all your Flash slideshow comments below. Next up, we have a really cool Flash uploader that you can embed into your own sites — we’ll provide more details as we get closer to release.

Tonight’s the night!

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

It’s a big day for DivShare — we’re nearing our six-month anniversary, and in that time we’ve built a base of more than 75,000 members who have uploaded nearly a million files. Tonight, we’re proud to introduce a brand new version of the site — redesigned, packed with new features and improved all around. We’re launching at midnight ET.

The biggest news is our new premium plan, DivShare Direct. It allows you to link directly to your files — with no download pages — and provides an unparalleled level of customization for the Flash video, audio and slideshow players you can embed on your own site. Plans start at less than 5 bucks a month, and include all our current premium upload features, like 2 GB file size and FTP access.

We’ve also done a full redesign of the site, focusing on simplicity and usability the whole way through. As part of that mission, a few features have been retired — most notably groups, profiles and inboxes/favorites. We’re also adding a bunch of options to the dashboard to keep you organized — you can switch to icon and thumbnail view, sort your folders alphabetically, and browse automatic categories like Images, Documents and Video. The new design, improved organization and awesome new premium options really move DS toward our goal in life: to be the smart, simple web host for everyone.

Stay tuned tonight for the launch and all the details on the new features. In the meantime, drop us an e-mail or comment away with any questions. See ya tonight!

Flash Video and Audio: Upgraded and Redesigned

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Great news! Tonight we’re rolling out a redesigned Flash MP3 player and some cool tweaks to the video player that will make your DivShare embeds even better. We’ve also got some really cool stuff in store for you over the next week in this department, so stay tuned. First up, the new MP3 player:

Obviously the visual redesign brings it in line with our Flash video design, which is cool. Behind the scenes, we’ve also dramatically simplified the embed code, which will make it a lot easier for you to add the audio player to your site. And we’ve also added an option that makes it easy to grab the embed code from the Flash player — just click that “< >” icon to copy the code to your clipboard for transfer to another site. (We also know that a few people might not want this feature, so we’ll be adding an account preference to disable it tomorrow.)

Next up, videos. We’ve added the automatic embed code here as well and spruced up some of the other functionality for some added hotness. Here’s an example from our friends over at GnarStar.tv:

As you can see, the new embed code tool is in there too. Also, for both players, you can add the autoplay feature very easily, and there’s a lot less code to parse through. Just find this snippet, which appears in the code twice —

http://www.divshare.com/flash/video?myId=669729-226

Then add &autoplay=true to the end.

We’ve also got a new Flash slideshow embed cooking, so we’ll release that over the next couple days. Stay tuned for a ton of upgrades, a redesign, new features and new premium options soon. And if you visited the site in the last 24 hours, thanks for being a part of DivShare’s highest-traffic day ever. Happy uploading!

The New Download Page

Monday, April 30th, 2007

Another day, another big DivShare upgrade. We’ve redesigned the download page and added a ton of great new features, including comments, better gallery navigation, and embeddable Flash slideshows. Here’s a list of all the new stuff — we’ll go into more detail on the slideshows in the next post.

Comments
The much-requested commenting feature is here, allowing any DivShare user to post their feedback on their favorite DS files. We’re really excited about getting more interaction between users, as well as bringing more people who are viewing and downloading files into the DivShare community. As the owner of a file, you can delete any comments you want, and if you post a comment you’ll be able to remove it at any time. Likewise, you can turn off comments for your files altogether from your My Account page.

Easier Sharing Options
We’ve made the sharing options — including links, embed code and the other HTML that lets you add files to your own site — a lot simpler and more prominent on the page, and for embeddable videos, audio and slideshows, we’ve also put the code right below the file for easy access.

“View Full Image” Mode
We automatically resize images for faster downloads and easier display on the download page, but until now you had to download the full-size image to view it. We’ve fixed that by adding a “View Full Image” option to any file that’s been sized down. Check out a full-size example, and then its regular-size counterpart.

Improved Gallery Navigation
We’ve always let you browse the thumbnails of all the images in a gallery, but for large galleries, that could mean increased load time and a long list of images to choose from. We’ve made some changes to provide a much sleeker interface, which shows four images at a time and allows you to scroll through the rest without ever leaving the page.

Flash Slideshows!
This is an awesome addition that we’ve been working on for a while now — not only do we produce a sleek Flash slideshow for all your image galleries, but you can also embed it on your site, profile or blog with a few lines of HTML! There are plenty more details in this post, but check out an example right here.

Enjoy the upgrades, and go crazy with those comments :). Have a great night!
