Long file descriptions, forum code and file passwords
Hey guys, thanks to everyone who was a part of DivShare’s biggest day ever for yesterday’s launch of the new version. Tonight we’re rolling out a few quick upgrades — we’ve boosted the maximum length of file descriptions from 50 to 255 characters, and we’ve put a Forum link (BBCode) on all your download pages and sharing link lists. In the next few days we will be adding an option to password-protect a file, allowing you to share the file with a small group of people to whom you give that password. If someone tries to go to your file’s download page, they won’t be able to see or download anything without the password.
Stay tuned, and thanks for using DivShare.

And what about that subfolders and making whole folders private, which was suggested before on this blog? I expected that you’ll add this in this new version.

Thanks a lot for the file description upgrade, that was always a big headache for me. You’re great
About the forum link for images, there are problems. Although it worked for vBulletin forums, for phpBB, which has over 50% of the market share it failed. I’ve seen that for embedding images in phpBB forums, the image URL must end in .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png… I hope these problems don’t make me move to a image specific web hosting site. I liked DivShare for being able to use it to host both files and images in the same place.

The new design and features are great. The only thing I want to ask about is what happened with those - select all - buttons that were in the right side of the share option window.

i am with milan on this one. subfolders are really important and would allow me to organize my file and folders much better.
another important thing is allowing the full folder names to be displayed without being truncated in the left pane of the dashboard. a variable pane width would easily solve this problem.
the password protection of specific public files is a great idea and would allow me to make more files public without worrying abot who can download them.

What about the direct link to image?
Right now it’s impossible upload a picture and put it wherever i want. It returns only a download code, not the conventional path (divshare.com/……./image.jpg).
It’s a serious problem because i used divshare for my images and now, if the situation doesn’t change, i need to find an other hoster.
I liked divshare and i hope someone correct this soon.

What about SECURITY? As I posted in “We’re launched”, setting your files as private doesn’t do a thing. My “private” upload, with no postings anywhere, had 3 downloads. Another awesome site going down the toilet.

Hi Sherrie,
Rest assured that it’s impossible to access a private file without logging in to your account. Our script sometimes counts hits to the “log in” page as downloads, so that is probably the reason for the discrepancy — we’re fixing that now. We’re also adding password-protected folders soon, as mentioned above.

Related to your new look (which I have to say I like!), what is the name of the font you’ve used for the logo text and other little headers elsewhere? I like it alot.
Thanks for making this great service even better

Ah, geez…the forum link works fine, unless you use phpBB, which is what most blogs/forums use.
Why not add the BB link, as well as a plain forum link? Go back to the way you WERE doing it.
I have no objection to change…it’s when you foul up something that was functioning perfectly that I get annoyed.
And I figured out what was happening with the download numbers. I still think it would be nice if you had some kind of “tracking” device, so I could at least see the IP address that did the download, but hey…it works, so I won’t gripe.

thanks for all thing u’ve done, DivShare … but i think you should roll back the function “List View” in Dash Board … ^^

Thanks for putting back the forum code
I’ve made a video-tutorial for my users to know hot to put a thumbnail for a picture uploaded at divshare:

I only hope you will just improve and add some features, not take them back, i hope this was an exception (getting rid of groups, profiles, favorities etc.) and at least from now on you will keep your promise: “your files stays online, forever, no matter what”.
Thanks.

I’m having problems uploading. I uploaded a few things, but now when I try, instead of uploading it, it says “Error, Please Upload File”. Is it because you’re working on it?

I’d love to have a link to a whole folder, so I can share the contents of the whole folder with just one link.

anisah: that sounds like a really great idea that would make sharing files even easier and more convenient.

I suggest a folder with mp3 files will become a playlist folder.
Like the image folder becomes a galery.
(And i totaly agree with the idea about users can make subfolders)

I would love to share a whole folder as well, the thing I miss about the profiles that we got rid off, is that it listed all the stuff we have uploaded.
What about being able to type a description next to the files, of what we have uploaded.

Hey all, you actually can link to an entire folder of files with a single link. Any download link of a file in a folder automatically lists the other files in the folder. Voilà!
