Uploading with Power
If you haven’t noticed, we love new features. We’ve got a lot more on tap this week, but tonight we’re happy to release a huge one — the DivShare Power Uploader. Never again will you have to scour your computer for files using the “Browse” button — this sweet new uploading tool provides a visual, drag-and-drop interface that includes a folder tree, file previews, and everything else you need for the perfect upload.
Give it a shot by heading over to the Power Upload page. Your browser will prompt you to give the Uploader permission to run on your computer — there are more detailed instructions on the page itself, but, like everything around here, it’s a pretty simple process. If you don’t have one yet, you’ll also need a DivShare account (signing up is fast and free). In the meantime, here’s a screenshot of the Uploader in action, and you can learn more about the application itself below.
The uploader is a Java Applet and ActiveX Control that provides an awesome interface between your hard drive and DivShare. All your local files will appear on the left, in the same tree format you’d see in “My Computer” or anywhere else you’re surfing through your files. On the right, you’ll see all the files in your selected directory, including thumbnails for your images so you can easily see which photos you’re uploading from a big batch with similar file names. Just like on your local computer, you can change the view to display thumbnails, icons, a file list or all your file details. Once you pick your files — you can upload as many as 10 at a time, double the regular upload form — just click “Add” to put them on your upload list, then send them to DivShare with the big “Upload” button. A fancy progress bar will tell you how much time is left and which file is being sent, and you’re done!
The rest of the process goes just like your standard DivShare upload. And, if you play around a little, you’ll also find that the Power Uploader has great support for resuming a canceled or broken upload — that reduces your wait time in a big way if something goes wrong. We love the new tool, and we’ve already made the switch to full-time Power users :). We’ve also added an option on your My Account page that allows you to set the Power Uploader as your default upload style.
As always, we want to hear all your ideas, suggestions and error reports — just post them in the comments below. More to come this week: premium FTP access and huge file sizes, embeddable Flash image galleries, and a new design for our Flash video player. Comment away!

hooray!!! i really like the new upload system. it seems very well thought out, easy to use and fast. in addition the drag and drop and right click menu seal the deal for me.
some improvements are:
1. ability to minimize the upload files box. some might find this a little intrusive if they want to do other things in the browser while uploading.
2. have an option to use an upload files progress bar rather than upload files box.
3. eliminate the numbers of files to upload at 1 time. the 10 file upload limit is way too little for this uploading format. ex: uploading a folder or directory.
on a side note, the restriction of uploading executable files is not cool. it puts a major damper on what i can upload. i don’t want to have to deal with zipping the tools and utilities that are executables when hosting them. i understand that viruses are a concern, but the user should be responsible for their own files and making sure that they are virus free. all you would have to do is put a disclaimer that says that “warning: the files may contain viruses when uploaded from the user. please scan the files with an anti-virus scanner to help prevent a virus infection.”
so now you are off the hook and don’t have to worry about angry users who destroy data because you have a disclaimer. you could also scan all of the uploaded files for viruses, but that might not be cost, time and performance efficient.

10 files…I want more~~
April 18th, 2007 at 11:39 pm
Sweet tool~
April 19th, 2007 at 12:34 am
20-30 files would be better. I could see why you would want 10 though, including some primary issues with server stress, and etc. Other than that, nice upgrade, a bit buggy with Firefox 2.x

i love this new feature divshare is the coolest site ever but one improvement i want is upload a folder without compressing it !! but by now i’m happy thanks continue =)

Thanks Divshare. The new uploader is an excellent tool!
The only thing missing is a reference to the actual upload speed in KB/s. Would it be possible to add that?
Do you currently limit up/down speeds? If so, will you be removing limits for premium users?
Cheers

Agree with konhEm. Power Upload is good but a standalone app should be great. Also, java sux.
Flickr Uploadr is a clear example of goodness for uploading. Easy, select files, select folders and groups and permissions and upload.
Thanks

Is divshare give unlimited file storage for member?
April 19th, 2007 at 9:07 am
to kagura: divshare gives unlimited file storage for members and non-members. as long as the uploads are 200mb or less, you are good to go. and your files never expire.
that’s why divshare is so great!
April 19th, 2007 at 10:33 am
Not to worry about files size that is good from DivShare and thank for your new Power Uploader. With 10 files at 1 time upload is good but if more files 20 or 30 or more is better. Thank again for your great service.
April 19th, 2007 at 11:10 am
A standalone app would be great! Also, thumbnails view is rather slow for me. Details view works like a charm. Thanks for one more great feature, Divshare! =)
April 19th, 2007 at 11:21 am
How I can resume broken upload? It said something like “proxy not found” when I uploaded about 80mb/120mb -.- And It’s impossible upload 200mb in normal uploader coz near 180mb it stops and don’t show progress and nothing -.-
April 19th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
Add RSS support to groups! yay I want to know when anyone upload stuff in my groups!
Also subfolders, and file commenting!
April 20th, 2007 at 3:44 am
This is the only thing I really need for divShare!
April 20th, 2007 at 8:29 am
need a option to create sub folders
mp3 flash player - option to change song from the embedded player
April 20th, 2007 at 9:12 am
Still a many bugs. They are being fixed, so be patient. As for the embedded MP3 flash player, I would have to say that the power uploader is actually coded in java, not flash. So it wouldn’t be possible to embed a flash player unless clicked and loaded externally.

I’m really really disappointed :@ I should consider lucky myself when I can upload a file successfully with this “power” uploader
April 21st, 2007 at 12:31 am
Hey guys, thanks for all the feedback! Here are a few responses to comments about errors and additions:
St. Alex: The Power Uploader should automatically resume a broken or cancelled upload simply by choosing the file and clicking “upload” again in the same browser session. It sounds like you’re having some general HTTP upload problems, which could be an issue with your local connection or a browser incompatibility issue. We’ve sent you a support e-mail to go over more the details and get you uploading successfully.
Groups: Totally off-topic, but we will be rolling out the groups RSS feature soon too.
More files / bigger max size: We’ll be introducing some awesome new premium options this week that allow you to upload an unlimited number of files in one upload with the Power Uploader, and increase the max file size in a huge way. And, of course, we will roll out some tweaks to the look and work flow of the Power Uploader for all users along the way.
PC-based Uploading: A desktop uploading app is definitely on the list, but is quite a while away as far as development goes. We’ll keep you updated!
Thanks for your feedback, enjoy the new feature!

Did you make this ? Or modify the script, lol. Sort of the same type of method of what I use on my website to upload.

Hi! First of all, I want to say that I’m glad to hear that DivShare offers unlimited uploads! That’s what I need for my new and improved website coming soon hehe.
I’m a new member here and I want to know something:
I want to know if DivShare also offers unlimited bandwidth or download?
Do they allow hotlinking of the uploaded file?
Because some file storing website usually have advertisements before downloading a certain file. It’s pretty much annoying!
I hope DivShare offers hotlinking without advertisements and unlimited bandwidth. That would be very cool and will surely make every member happy.
I hope the webmaster will reply to my message. Thanks!

Hey Ron,
Glad to hear you dig DivShare! We do offer unlimited bandwidth and data transfer for both uploads and downloads. We allow you to hotlink some files, such as images, and you can embed MP3s and videos directly onto your site using our Flash players. Other than that, just link to our download pages — I think you’ll find them professionally designed and much different from the average file host. Rock on!

FTP uploads and bye bye RapidShare.
Being able to upload more files via the webinterface would be nice.
Thanks.

It sure is Rob! I also noticed that it’s really well done. I’m glad to hear that you also offer unlimited bandwidth. I thank you very much for that. Hope your free and great offers will last forever. Keep up the good work! Cheers!

Last Night (4/20), I did my first upload, with the new power uploader. I had to create a folder, and then put the files in same. I am a member of two groups, here. After going through several steps, my files finally got uploaded to one of my groups, with folder showing. I’m hoping for the day when DivShare offers a drag and drop feature of complete folders, from our hard drives.

the best thing to ever happen to uploading. this is great! PEACE

A paradise for all hosters

PLEASE, please, please - find a way to treat Raw image files actually as viewable image files, rather than non-image files!
It is somewhat less than ideal to find that a file which showed as a thumbnail in power uploaded (eg Nikon raw .nef files) is treated as a non-image file once uploaded to divShare. This means that if even one raw file has been included - then the upload fails to be a Gallery and is treated just as a folder.
I have been waiting for the paid Premium version of divShare - and (dependant on the price!!) will use divShare to store (and share when appropriate) all the backup copies of my photography.
However this will only work if Raw files are treated as image files and show as preview thumbnails - and can form Galleries.
Jeremy
P.S. Currently only some types of Raw files create thumbnails in Power Uploader - so that needs looking at too.

Hi! I saw you’re post that you’re developing a desktop uploader for you’re site I have some friend who could give you some help. They have developed a similar site to this one but their host didn’t support them and they had to leave. So if you’re interested send me an e-mail.

Actually i have been using divshare even before the power uploader was introduced. i had some problems uploading the files because of my slow internet connection. but now the power uploader has changed everything. it is really awesome and great uploader ….. i cannot think of anything else now..
There is one request to the developers there if they can provide an option for resumable uploads this will be if possible then i think it would be the first of its kind in the world.
Thanks to you all guys there and CHEEEEEEEEEEEERSSSSSSss……!

Well. I haven’t read this blog for awhile now. A shame, because I love this site so much! So… I have some new ideas since I last posted (way back in January, on one of the first bloggings).
A standalone application would be very well received. I suggest, however, that instead of barring a limited number of uploads, the uploaded could be supported by ads. Nothing that obstrusive, of course… Just an idea. I suggest taking a look at MediaMax’s beta uploader, as well as MegaUpload’s application.
Alright, thats only one idea. Still, I think its worth bringing to fruition. I’ll have more later, I’m sure. As always, a great service you’re providing to the masses! Great work

Hi,
Power uploader don’t work anymore for free share, I’ve tried many time but it don’t work as Pro coming on to the site.
April 26th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
I like much divshare to store my files, but they have a very great problem: 90% of the uploads give error: are reinitiated, stopped or simply it gives error,
I have attempt also to raise them by the normal method and with the Power Uploader, but lamentably the failures are constant.
I am afraid that if does not solve these problems soon it were very detrimental so that hosting prospers.
I also try turning off the “upload progress meter” but errors continues
His excuse my English, I do not speak it very well
April 26th, 2007 at 8:48 pm
it should close the upload dialog when i checked the “Close this dialog when upload complete”. but i does not happen instead of “ok” message popup first.
there is no point to check the option.
because sometimes errors occurred. it responses nothing when “ok” message is clicked after upload finished

Uploads fail more than a fair gun
I will have to return to use badongo or rapidshare

I’ve got some problems with Java. Unfortunatelly, I’ve clicked “Cancel” when it have appeared the Java console in my Mozilla Firefox, and now I can’t use the Poder Uploader.
What can I do? Can someone help me, please?
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:14 pm
whoever says divshare gives you unlimited space is full of [bleep] they will delete your files if you have to many files with 100 MB - 200 just like what they did to me [bleep] is just like veoh.
A note from Rob: We edited the above comment for language. We never delete your files, regardless of how many large files you keep in your account. The only reason a file would ever be removed from DivShare is if it contained nudity, copyrighted material or something illegal or in violation of our terms. Upload away

When I try to use power upload it keeps telling me to select one or more files. I have selected files (chose them from the top list and added them to the bottom list, edited descriptions and everyting).
I use WinXP pro, Firefox 2.0.0.3, limited user account.

Power upload tool is great - just uploaded dozens of 2M+ photos - sure beats the 4 at a time! One question - for organizing files, is it possible to have a tool to sort folders? I’ve labeled the folders by date, and trying to figure out why they list randomly.
For example, if I had a folder that was called 2007 01 random name, and wanted 2007 02, and 2007 03 listed in order, is there a way to do that?
Great stuff guys!
June 10th, 2007 at 8:53 am
I really like the power uploading. Thank you. May I add some requests?
I got the same problem as grataballi. I wish there’s a tool for sorting folders and for bringing a whole folder to the profile page instead of modifying each file to appear at the profile page.
I’d like to share my photo collection to my friends. i used to bring some files to the profile page but since there is a notice that the profile page will be deleted, how may I show everything to my friends? It’s difficult to send them links to several hundreds of images ( almost a thousand ) when I finish uploading!
Thanks, Rob. I hope you can reply to my question.
