Introducing DivShare Video

It’s time for another big upgrade — today we’re proud to launch DivShare Video. Every video you upload to the site will now be converted to a quick, convenient Flash video that you can watch directly from the download page or embed on your own blog, web site or profile. We’ve loaded DivShare Video with a lot of cool features — here’s a quick list:

Download your original video
We’re a file host at heart, so you will always have access to your original video file in addition to your new Flash video.

Huge, high quality vids
We encode your videos at high quality and display them at a width of 560 pixels, making them bigger and badder than most other videos on the web.

The easiest uploads around
There’s no extra work involved in creating your Flash videos — just upload the file to DivShare, and we’ll recognize it as a video that fits our specs. The system will automatically start the conversion, and you’ll get an e-mail (as well as see it on the download page) when it’s done!

Anonymous uploads, 200 MB file size, and all the DivShare standards
Your videos will enjoy the same freedoms as all your other DivShare files — there’s no video time limit, and you can upload any source video up to 200 MB in size. And, of course, you can upload and create a Flash video without even registering for an account.

We’ll go into more detail about converting your current vids and fill you in on a few things we’re still working on during this weekend’s Beta test. But first, get started by checking out this sample vid:

Not bad, right? We know that a lot of you already have videos online — in fact, a large portion of our most popular files are already videos. To create a Flash version of a video that’s already on DivShare, just log in to your account and visit your video’s download page. From there, you’ll see a dialog with a link that says “Convert My Video Now” — click that, and you’re on your way! Conversion will take a few minutes, and you’ll get an e-mail when it’s all ready to go.

And, as we mentioned, we’re releasing the video service in Beta for the weekend — which means that we know it’s not 100% done, but we want you to start playing with it and give us your feedback while we finish things up. If you have ideas, suggestions or errors to report, hit us up in the comments below. In the meantime, here’s a list of stuff we’re working on now:

The Flash Player — We’ll have an upgraded version, including Full Screen (which we know is missing now) over the weekend, and we’re also working on different skins for you to choose from when you embed the player on your own pages.

More Video Formats — Right now, we support a lot of formats: MOV, AVI, WMV, MPG and ASF. We’re also planning to add Real Video tonight, and we’re working on support for 3GP in the future.

Our Conversion System — We’ll be watching our conversion servers carefully this weekend to tweak the process to be as efficient as possible and keep your wait time for vids at a minimum.

That’s it! Watch out for more upgrades to video all weekend and a bunch of new features, including really nice embeddable Flash galleries, coming up next week. As always, we want to hear all your comments, so post away. Happy uploading, and enjoy your new vids!

Niiiice! But i think it would be good if we could play the loaded video while the rest is loading and not wait for it to fully load ;).

  9. mark Says:

nice idea divshare with the video sharing

what about a feature to auto transfer files from other servers to your account (like ftp to ftp)

Also the option to resume big downloads.

  10. Honeycut Says:

“what about a feature to auto transfer files from other servers to your account (like ftp to ftp)”

I’m with you Mark. I think this “sideloading” feature would kick ass.

  11. Rob Says:

konhEm: Good catch. Some users may not have been able to see the conversion option on existing video download pages — that should be fixed now.

It would be great if widescreen (16:9) video can be transform into 4:3 during conversion. Thanks for such a nice feature. I can smell playlist options is coming along. :)

I’d prefer hosting of native video files, ala multiply.com

The loading status stops at 0%.

  17. Traspler Says:

    PERFECT :D great addition :)

  18. ShinKo Says:

Oh man! This is greatest and best idea overall!! Really handy!

    Just a Question:
What format of video files does it convert?

  19. ShinKo Says:

Does it convert RealPlayer format file or .mov??

  20. Jonas Says:

This is a really cool addition to Divshare, but I have a gripe:

If I upload a different aspect ratio than 4:3 I would like for it to be preserved somehow in the Flash version. Black bars maybe, but rather a choice of different aspect ratios would be great!

  21. Leo Says:

Your video player crashed my Firefox 2 when maximized…Very weird.

  22. Raniie Says:

Here’s my feedback on the video feature.

-I thikn further optimization is in need to reduce the amount of pixelation in videos with high motions.

[Example Comparisons #1] - The short video is from a popular anime series call Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
    Youtube LQ version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZhb959EgX4
The video quality is quite blurry and pixelated, but it loads quick. It’s a good concept if the intention is just to let people see a quick preview content of the video.

    Youtube HQ version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7ggMWYHUtc
The video is much more detailed and clear. You can make out the drawn lines and there are hardly any pixelation in the video. The drawback is, youtube is unable to stream it live, so there is a longer waiting period for the video to preview.

    DivShare Video Beta: http://www.divshare.com/download/399431-cb9
The video here is a mix between Youtube’s LQ and HQ. The video is detailed at mainly still scenes, or scene will low motion, but once more motion are on the screen, the video get more blocky and disorted.

[Example Comparison #2] - A music video of lots of motion animation action.
    Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g3UVuJ7GpY
    DivShare Video Beta - http://www.divshare.com/download/399571-666
DivShare Video version definitely looks much better than Youtube version.

I’d still like to see a quality near that or of Youtube’s HQ version. I know you guys can do it!

Also what the webpage can use:
-Comment Box for gallery / video section. (This will help expand the social interaction aspect of DivShare.)

  23. Mike Says:

What if my video is already in flash format (.flv) ? I don’t see an option to convert it nor does it automatically show up ready to play.
    Thanks

  24. Chris Says:

Woa…. It works great! It has a very nice picture quality. But the sound is kind of bad… that’s a bit sad but overall it’s really really nicely done!

  25. Chris Says:

    doeas not support .mkv…

other question: If I upload a widescreen video. Will it add the black bars automatically or will it stretch the video?

    n another formats….please..
    thx.

  33. carlos Says:

It is a very good idea but, I only need it for upload mobile videos and in this moment divshare don’t suport 3gp

  34. GS Says:

It would be great if max size will be upped to 250 Mb (like vimeo.com which currently has the best vide quality amonght video sharing websites)

  35. venkat Says:

It was not playing, it is waiting still it completed buffers fully
No body waits that longer time for that
Its better to play the video at what ever it may buffer just like youtube videos but youtube has a limit of adding only 10min video but u have a chance of full but take of this action of full buffeiring and play continues and fast
    But even though its nice
    Hope u understand my language
    with best regards
    venkat

  36. hhzzz Says:

please add mp4 support. thanks for everything!

love the new flash video idea, the only problem i had was when i imbedded it into my site, all it did was sit there telling me it was loading, i waited 5 minutes and it still didnt load? - hopefully its just teething problems

Very good idea - I’ve tried to upload a wmv file, embedded in my website but it stays for minutes saying it’s loading …too much waiting time, i’m sure you’ll improve it, we know it’s still beta testing ?!

  40. iPowers Says:

I had a feeling you guys were going to do that. ;)

  41. Phillip Dampier Says:

When uploading .flv content, there is no embed link, but the video plays on the divshare content page. I’d like to directly embed the content into my site but that is not working for direct .flv uploads.

  42. Ken Says:

Umm, sorry to be a bother again. Is there a way to disable the conversion for files? If not, can I stop the email notification?
It seems a bit excessive that we get an email for every file conversion.
And personally, the flash feature doesn’t really appeal to me. If I wanted flash, I would have gone to YouTube. My 2 cents.
    Thanks for the great service!

  43. Santhosh Says:

It’ very nice but i can’t play a video format of rm (Real player file). It will be too good if it does

  44. YoyO Says:

I second what Ken said about disabling the conversion. How about a simple checkbox (on by default if you like) on the upload page which determines whether or not the video will be converted. Why would you want to over-tax your conversion system by assuming EVERYONE wants a flash video of their avi. Especially when it’s a lower quality and limited to 4:3

  45. St. Alex Says:

I’ve uploaded yesterday my 2 .wmv videos, and they are not converted yet :S why? :(

  46. matrixreload Says:

I use divshare for the first time, and very sastify with this site.
I don’t know how to contact admin for my idea, so I give comment here, hope that admin will see.
In “Create Folder” function, I don’t see function “Sub Folder”. I think that it is very useful function. Example, I upload music, wallpaper, software, document, … In music, I have many kind of music (dance, hip-hop,…)… So, if don’t have “Sub Folder”, my Folder list will very long.
Hope you will see comment, and function Sub Folder will coming soon.
    Best wish to you!

  47. Budd Says:

I agree with YoyO. Not everyone wants their vid files to be converted and automatically displayed on the download page. I simply want to provide a download link for my files. I thinks the flash conversion is a great idea, but there should be an option to turn it off during the upload.

    Thanks.

  48. kent0129 Says:

My Video cannot be converted to Flash.
Could you help me to fix the problem?

  49. kietjohn Says:

    Good!
But it would be better if you support the .mp4 format for converting.
Or you can have a .mp4 downloading option.

    Great, wonderful, but…

Since I have signed up as a premium member, the videos I embed on my site are slow, take forever, and I keep hearing complaints from people about them. i really want to make this work with divshare, but what is the deal? The files are not large (usually 10mb) or so. I don’t get it.
