Get social with DivShare Profiles

After a few delightful programming all-nighters, we’re proud to introduce a brand new (and very cool) feature — DivShare Profiles. As we’ve mentioned in many previous posts, this is the first step on the road to a more social DivShare. We’re soft-launching profiles today to get you revved up for our big new feature, DivShare Groups, which will allow you to share files with anyone on the ‘net based on a common interest, project or organization.

Groups are about a week away, so let’s get started by learning about your brand new profile. First, we’ll talk privacy. By default, your profile is empty. You’ll have to add your photo, links and files to get started, because we don’t want to expose any files or info from your account without your consent. (The only exception — we set your default “profile display name” to the first name on your account, but you can change it at any time.)

You have a few privacy options — you can make your profile visible to everyone, only to your friends, or only to your friends and common group members. Then, you can manually add or remove files from your profile using the drop-down list in the dashboard — this drop-down now handles displaying files on your profile, setting file privacy and moving files between folders. When creating your profile, you can also set an automatic behavior for newly uploaded files — by default, no files are added to your profile unless you do it on the dashboard.

If you guys have more privacy ideas to keep everything safe and secure, let us know. Now let’s move on to the fun stuff, the profile itself. Here’s a screenshot of my profile:

Pretty hot, right? I’ll break down all the moving parts:

My Display Name
You can set this to whatever you want — it doesn’t have to be your real name.

My Picture
Hey, it’s me! Your photo will be resized to a max of 70×70, and we recommend you add something cool, because it’ll be displayed whenever someone checks out your profile or files.

My Tagline
This is the gray text below my name — it’s a totally freeform spot for you to put an intro to your profile, some info about you, a quote from Hook, or whatever else you please.

My Custom URL
You can create a custom address for your profile — for example, mine is divshare.com/profile/rob. By default, your address will be your user ID number, but you can make it something more beautiful when you create your profile.

My Links
Here’s the cool part about your DivShare profile — it’s a jumping-off point for all the other places you hang out online. You can add unlimited links to your favorite sites, forums, blogs and social networks so that your DivShare friends can connect with you around the web.

My Friends
And what’s a profile without some friends to share it with? A random selection of your DS friends shows up on the sidebar, and you can make new friends using the links that appear at the top of the sidebar on any particular profile.

…and, of course, My Files
The meat of your profile is this list of all your stuff — as you can see, folders and galleries will be grouped together with the first four items displayed, and all files will show up with a thumbnail or icon to let you know exactly what you’re looking at. It’s like a bigger, more beautiful version of the dashboard for everyone to see.

That’s it! We’ve deliberately made profiles clean and simple, and we’re looking forward to a ton of feedback from you as you play around with the new feature and make tons of DivShare friends. For the rest of the post, we’ll go over the steps to editing your profile — it’s pretty easy :).

Creating and Editing Your Profile

You’ll see a new “Edit My Profile” link on your dashboard, and you can also get to the profile editing form by clicking on the “My Account” tab then choosing “Edit Public Profile” from the new sub-menu on that page. All your regular account info (e-mail address, password, etc.) can still be changed from the “edit my account info” page. Here’s a shot of the profile form:

From here, you can add your display name, tagline, custom URL and photo. The next section allows you to add as many links as you want, and the last two items on the form allow you to set your privacy. Once that’s set up, move over to the dashboard and start adding some files to your profile!

Things have changed slightly on the dash. First, you will now see an “On Profile” note in the gray info text for each file that is currently displayed on your profile. To add files to your profile, use the drop-down menu in the top right that says “Modify files…”. This allows you to add files to your profile (or remove them), and also now allows you to do mass privacy changes. Check it out:

One other quick note: A file must be public to appear on your profile. If you add a file to your profile, it will automatically make it public too. If you make a file private, it will automatically remove it from your profile. If you have any problems making your way around the dash, let us know, but basically all the power now lies in the drop-down menu.

Once you get all those cool files added to your profile, you’ll notice one more addition — a link back to your profile on the download page. This only appears for files that are on your profile, so don’t worry about your picture appearing on files you don’t want everyone to see. Check out this example:

We’re going to do a lot more of this with the new download page design we’re working on, including showing some of your other profile files, linking to your friends and groups, and so on. I think everyone’s going to have a lot of fun surfing the DivShare groups and profiles all day once this really gets rolling.

OK, go get started on that profile! And when you’re ready to make some friends, you can start with me and Dave — we’ve got a little bet going to see who can make more friends (in real life, I obviously win).

And, as always, we want all your feedback right here in the comments. We’ll be doing a ton more development with profiles and the other social features this month, and we want you to be the driving force behind the new ideas — after all, DivShare is all about making your life simpler and more fun. With that, have a great weekend, and we can’t wait to see your brand new profiles!

    Really nice!

    I love it.
Now I agree with JustLikeThat about the member search, and also:

-Is there any way to see all folder contents without downloading a file first?
Because I want to see all files in a folder that says it has 20 files and I just see the first 4 in the profile, so the only way to see the files is downloading one of those first 4 files.
-A desktop uploader should be great. Simple as the Flickr Uploadr should be awesome.
-Private messaging between members. Or share Twitter accounts or something that allow us to communicate with others.

    Thanks

I know it’s now related, but, the greatest thing in dashboard that can help users to organize things are TAGS, folders are not helping very much, that’s because a file can be in only ONE folder :), and and a file can have many tags :D…

You may have more friends, Howard, but I have more family members. Oh wait, I think you may have me beat there too. Dang it. :(

    LOL
    I’m an idiot!!!
I’ve added my files to see them on my profile and when I tried to remove them I clicked on DELETE, thinking it was meant to delete them from profile view, so I lost everything… :(
Don’t make the same mistake :P

Member Search, Yes! By email address, I agree. It would also be great to have a folder descriptions for those that are on the profile. And third, it would be nice to have some form of contacting the member sharing the file. Don’t give away email adresses (spam prevention), something internal, like Yahoo 360 does - you can sent a message but no info is ever given away.

how can we see everyone thats within the DS network?

  12. Raniie Says:

Great stuff again, but it might be a good idea to have a reminder about downloading files from random people’s profile, since now we’re able to share files with other DivShare members, the potential of spreading virus, trojans, and such is at a much higher risk over this new network. So only download files from people you know and trust, even so, always have an anti-virus and other type of programs to protect your PC. Cause even if you can trust your personal friends, you can never trust their PC system. Will DivShare incoporate any type of measures to keep files “safe” ? Such as a file scan on DivShare’s own harddrives, etc?

  13. Paul Komarek Says:

I am working on licensing issues for an afterschool program. I was incensed to see a “zwinky” bikini-girl ad on the divshare download page sent to my business clients.

In addition, I am concerned about all the profile info on the download page. I do not want my contents to see any profiles but mine, and then only if I want them to.

And the person I sent my file link to also has access to all the files I placed in that “folder.” I did not intend this.

I want the download pages to be “plain vanilla.”

If I send people a link to a file, I want people to only see the single file link I send.

Please let people know how to do this, or if you are changing this service to something business users clearly do not want, please advise. I will delete all my content and caution everyone I know to stay away.

  14. Raniie Says:

    Heya Paul Komarek,

To make files not accessible by others, you will need to set the files to ‘private’ from the drop down menu. They won’t be able to download it, and only you will be able to and requires you to log-in first, of course. However, they can still “see” the file, if it’s in the same folder with other files that have “public” access.

To only let others see a “single” file. The files must not be in any folder. Which is another thing that’s missing from DivShare. You can move or place files into a folder, but how to you move it out of the folder and just let it be by itself? It seems once you moved or placed a file into a folder, there is no way to move it back to the “root” directory. Hopefully that missing opton will be added in another later update.

I also like the idea of having an option to disable random profiles from showing up on our profile page, too. So if I share my profile with my friends, they won’t have the possibility of seeing something they don’t want to see. Since images are not easy to moderate and there will be people out there using inappropriate images for their profiles (nudity, etc).

Better yet, I think a quick and temporary solution is a hide tab. If visitors want to check out other “Random Profiles” they will open the hidden tab to see for themselves, so they won’t be fully exposed by the images.

I also hope to see the ability to input a “seperate” description in each of the folder field. Using your image example, Rob.

The part where it say “Random Gallery - 6 Images” -Then the display of 4 images, just below that, if possible, I’d like to see an ability for us to input some sort of commentary or description about that folder section.

  15. Rob Says:

    Paul & Raniie:

Right now we’re experimenting with some different download page layouts, so it looks like the “browse profiles” will soon be replaced by “browse groups” or something that’s a little less personal — even if it’s not nudity or some other violation of our content standards, I can definitely imagine some files and profiles that you may not want your particular users to see. That feature won’t be around for much longer in its current form.

As for removing a file from a folder, you can do that from the dashboard using the “Modify files…” drop-down menu — just choose “remove from folder”, which is right below “create a new folder.”

Thanks as always for your feedback, and keep it coming!

  16. Raniie Says:

Ooh, I overlooked that selectable option. Thanks for pointing it out.

  17. Leandro Ardissone Says:

Other thing, can you extend the filename limit?
I don’t like my files names get stripped.

And special sharing should be great, something like a file is private, but you can share it sending an special link. (Like Flickr with sharing private Sets)

I knew it would happen…….Divshare exposes my business clients to porn.

You didn’t even warn me. I will now have to find an alternative file sharing service unless you can provide a way to shield my visitors from other peoples profiles or groups. Unfortunately I am now getting phone calls from the people I recommended this service to and they are upset with me because they have business clients as well.

you can make a link for the folders so all people could view all the files in a folder. And can we ever change the filenames on the files we uploaded. can we have space in the filenames and not dashes. What about allowing people to post a comment on your profile.
