The Upload Progress Bar
Since Day 1, it’s been our most requested feature, and this morning we’re making it a reality. We’re proud to introduce DivShare’s brand new upload progress bar — our favorite addition yet, and a great example of how a little AJAX can breathe new life into any site … even DivShare ;).
We’ve tested it pretty extensively, but because we’re using a lot of new software, we are going to make the new version of our upload form available on its own special page for the next day or two. That’s where you come in — we need you to test it out, beat it up, and get back to us with any errors, suggestions or other comments you have. When we’ve heard from tons of users and ensured that there are no major errors lurking behind all that fancy Web 2.0 scripting, we’ll flip the switch and make the progress-bar uploads the DivShare default.
Oh, and just in case you can’t wait, here’s a quick preview:
So, what are you waiting for? Head over to the Upload Progress Bar Beta Page and give it a try — it should treat your files exactly the same way as the old upload process, but this time you’ll see your upload percentage and progress live on the page. When you’re finished, head back here to the blog and comment away. And if you do encounter any errors (heaven forbid), please give us as much info about your browser and operating system as you can. Happy uploading!

Much Love.
February 12th, 2007 at 7:50 am
The upload progress bar is nice eye candy. And while I’m preaching to the choir, the feature I’m looking forward to most is the ability to name and re-name photo galleries to something other than Gallery 1, 2, etc.
February 12th, 2007 at 9:01 am
Very useful. Works perfectly for me.
But I read that AJAX is quite hard and resource eating for server and client.
So I hope it won’t slwo down the upload or download speed from your servers.
February 12th, 2007 at 9:05 am
love this bar best, when i uploaded and used the other bar (i didn’t even see the link for the new bar) i thought…….. i love this site it has everything i nedd, but if only it had a bar that show the progress. then said o well it has everything else stop being picky. and came to the blog and low and behold!!!
IT DOES HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED. THANK YOU FOR THIS PLACE AND HAVING EVERY THING. i know that all my friends will use this site. helen
February 12th, 2007 at 10:36 am
it’s the best site, indeed!
February 12th, 2007 at 10:48 am
Tested in Opera and looking good.
Question: Would this page be a logical place for a “Cancel” button, in case you change your mind? Closing the page or moving off the page, of course, cancel the operation, but I’m just wondering if it might not be a nice thing to have.
Related: Would it make sense to program in something that warns you when moving off the page when an upload is in progress? I’d be pained if at 99% I accidentally move off the page, mistaking it for another.
February 12th, 2007 at 11:45 am
Good, better and very interesting to know the state of the upload but, in my case it reduce the speed at 50-75%.
Browser: Firefox
Upstream: 320
Congrats! … for the site.
February 12th, 2007 at 12:55 pm
Love the new progress bar. It is especially useful when making big uploads. Still would like to see a folder system introduced to keep like files together instead of having to scroll through all my online files. Keep up the good work!
February 12th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
hurrrrraaah! just finished to upload about 36 MB zip file with photos with no problems. Exept that i was logged out. Had to login
IE7, Lithuania.
February 12th, 2007 at 2:28 pm
it is so useful,I need it
February 12th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
Hi, the progress bar is going well, but I can’t see the blue progress like in the preview picture. All I can see is text, such as percentage and how many KB I have upload so far (no flashy blue progress bar). I’m using Firefox 2.
I’m still waiting for “folder” option, or someway to organize the files. (like MediaMax, for example).
February 12th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
Just tried this. It won’t let me upload a 175MB avi file. It gave me an error saying it won’t accept file size greater than 200MB, when it’s 25MB under.
There’s also a problem when uploading *.png files. When the upload is completed, it renames the file to the path filename. The filename suppose to be Raniie.png but it ends up being: C__Documents_and_Settings_My_Images_Folder.png
There’s also no thumbnail or image sharing tags for png formats? I mean, sharing it as a viewable image and not as a download file.
Using IE 7.0.5730.11
Windows XP Service Pack 2
February 12th, 2007 at 3:23 pm
Nevermind the first statement. I can upload a 175MB file now.
February 12th, 2007 at 4:24 pm
The other one was nice, but this one is even nicer.
Very useful and informative, well done!
February 12th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
Well I tried it - I guess I got greedy - it appears to have failed. I tried to upload 4 files at the same time for a total of 174.34MB and after 1 hour plus, the page redisplayed as if I had not ever stated the upload, with the exception that the “upload” text button is not displayed but rather the progress bar showing 0% where before it had shown some progress. Right now as I type this I still have that window open, and something is seriously drawing on my computer as I am having trouble typing this note, but the progress bar is just reading 0% and the upload info reads 0 of 174.34MB in faint grey text.
February 12th, 2007 at 5:31 pm
Same here, just finished uploading a 175MB file and the server returns with an Upload error. Telling me to upload a file again.
February 12th, 2007 at 6:07 pm
I just uploaded 3 very small files - worked great! I like the status bar. Love the site, in general. Have to admit, I wouldn’t mind a file structure. Thanks!!
February 12th, 2007 at 6:40 pm
The new feature looks great, but I have to agree with Rick: a “cancel” button would be a useful addition.
I tried to upload a file twice, and both times I got an “error” message during the process. I uploaded the same file “the old fashioned way” and everything went perfect.
But, in short: GREAT SITE, GREAT FEATURES! Carry on, you’re doing a great job!
Greetings from the Lowlands!
February 12th, 2007 at 7:05 pm
Updates: Things are looking great, and we’ve added an upload speed meter as well as a “time remaining” count. We’ve also confirmed that there are some issues with large files, which we’ll be able to fix if everyone can give us some more details about file sizes that work or don’t work, and the exact errors you’re receiving on failure. It’s probably an easy fix, so we’ll keep you updated. Thanks for all your help so far!
February 12th, 2007 at 7:48 pm
Quick work / update there, Rob. Great job!
I recieved your email about the png problem. I thought I’ll reply it here, too, so others can be aware of the issue being handled and so you won’t have too many repeated inquiry about the same problem.
As the info requested. The png upload fine on the old uploader. The filename remain in tact. However, there are no tags to share the image for “display.” Only tags for downloading the png file.
February 12th, 2007 at 10:48 pm
I uploaded a 55 MB file with the beta progress meter and in the end an error popped up. It also happened with a 100 MB that I tried to upload recently with the progress meter. Both are zipped files, non password protected.
I hope this helps.

bonjour je voudrais que vous m acceptiez merci
February 13th, 2007 at 9:55 am
When I first saw your site it hadn’t all the features it has now, but even then I loved it, because of the unlimited space for an unlimited time!
And then you really quickly upgrade the site with features we people wanted.
It’s getting better and better every day and the new upload progress bar is just … fantastic!^^
It helps a lot, especially with big uploads, thank you very much!
P.S.: Are going to do the same for download?
February 13th, 2007 at 11:50 am
[…] The newest feature that was just introduced yesterday is the Upload Progress Bar. Before, there was an animated bar that kept on moving so that you knew it was still active, however there was no way of knowing how much it had uploaded, how much was left to download, and the amount of time it will take. The image below shows what the new progress bar looks like. This will be especially useful with larger downloads. […]

February 13th, 2007 at 1:56 pm

February 13th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Fabulous improvement! No more wondering how much longer my upload bandwidth will be hammered
February 13th, 2007 at 4:00 pm
Large Files Update: Hey everyone, thanks again for all your help! We are getting closer to clearing up the problems with large files, so once we have our server guys make some changes to our memory limits we should be good to go.
February 13th, 2007 at 4:03 pm
hey guys thanx for this wonderful free tool!
unfortunately i’ve experienced a problem with the beta progress bar: it’s stuck at 99% argh! the file was only 9,9 MB. for info, i’m using firefox 2.0.
keep up the good work! cheers!
February 13th, 2007 at 6:05 pm
I tried uploading a 55MBs mp3 file… first 2 times it got stuck at 81% so I used the regular upload and it didn’t work there either…
hope you can fix this soon!!
February 13th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
I don’t know if it’s me but I was able to upload a 100 MB zipped file yesterday with no problem on the regular upload, no progress bar. Now, it’s doing the same thing as if I was uploading it with the beta progress bar. An error always pops up in the end. I’m using FF 2.0 browser.
Keep up the good work and I hope everything works in the end and soon.
February 13th, 2007 at 8:21 pm
Thanks for everyone’s feedback so far, we really appreciate your help. We’re still experiencing some problems with the beta progress bar, but are working hard to get them ironed out as soon as possible.
In the meantime, you can upload all your files like normal using the current, non-beta upload page.
More updates soon.
February 14th, 2007 at 5:46 am
Great News! Thanks to all your help, we’ve finally pinpointed and solved the error that was occurring when you uploaded large files.
Turns out the AJAX part of the equation was jumping the gun and sending you to the next page a split second before the upload was finished, and that problem was accentuated by the size of the file. Anyway, it’s all fixed now, so try uploading those large files again and confirm for us that they work.
After that, we’re open for any more suggestions before we go live with the new upload bar. Two that have caught our eye: a “cancel” button and a warning if you click a link that would cancel your upload. Any others?
As always, you guys are the best. Thanks again for being part of the DivShare development process.
February 14th, 2007 at 7:13 am
Just added: The “cancel” button, and a function that asks you to confirm before leaving the page, so you don’t accidentally click out of your upload. Enjoy!
February 14th, 2007 at 8:01 am
Cool … That´s works !
Thanks & Greetings
February 14th, 2007 at 8:24 am
When i tried to upload a .rar file that was 95MB using the progress bar page when it got to around 95% an error message came up saying something about not being able to access query strings, but when i uploaded the same file without the progress bar it worked fine, this happed twice with 2 different files.
February 14th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
Last night, I got a request to reupload; but, I just uploaded 5 files and it worked perfectly.
February 14th, 2007 at 7:53 pm
just checking out the new progress bar and all looks good.
Thanks…..
biggin….
February 14th, 2007 at 8:51 pm
The Upload progress bar makes me happy.
Very very very Good!!
February 14th, 2007 at 11:32 pm
Rob, thanks for the updates. I’m not used to developers listening to the public, so this is a very strange experience indeed (in a good way).
BTW, I tested the feature that warns you when you click off the Upload page, and while it does work in IE7 and FF2, it doesn’t work in Opera 9.10. It just proceeds right to whatever page you want without incident.
Which reminds me, is a “Resume” function possible, or are incomplete files discarded? If they hung around for a while, and the user returned and attempted the same UL again, it would be pretty cool if it picked up from where it left off. Just a thought.
February 15th, 2007 at 12:04 am
Hey Rick, you da man. I’ll see if I can find a workaround for Opera — any other browsers not responding to the “clicking out of your upload” check?
As for the “resume” function, it’s not really possible using our current upload scripts, with or without the progress bar. But we’re working on a more software-based upload tool that will have a lot of new functionality, so hopefully we can include that in there. That tool won’t be out until after we finish our round of social upgrades, but keep it in mind. Thanks for all your help!
February 15th, 2007 at 9:40 am
I posted a 37 MB file and the progress bar seems to work well with Safari 2.0.4 under Mac OS X 10.4.8.
I was eagerly awaiting for such a nice feature ! I will recommend DivShare more and more.
February 15th, 2007 at 10:52 am

از ویژگی های قابل توجه این پلاگین وجود Upload Progress Bar زیبا و مفید آن می باشد که درصدی از فایل را که آپلود شده است را نمایش می دهد. when i tried a lot of differents file size
i found that there is a possibility of error happened when transferring the file
that doubts me a lot.
That never happens without the progress bar…
what should i do to tackle the problem?
March 3rd, 2007 at 3:03 pm
Well, you should make the uploads work even without javascript support. You know, when I try to upload it via elinks, a form without a submit button is impossible to send so now I can’t upload anything… And I think there isn’t any text-mode-only browser vith javascript support…
