The New Dashboard: Search files and manage your galleries

Now we’re really getting to the good stuff. We’ve added three great new features to the dashboard — improved gallery organization, the ability to add new files to an old gallery, and an easy way to search your files. Here are the details on how each one makes DivShare better than ever:

Gallery Organization

One of our least favorite parts of the old dashboard was that it wasn’t always clear which images were included in a gallery, and there was no visual grouping for those images. So we added that much-needed visual element, and also a note showing how many images the gallery contains:

Adding New Images to a Gallery

The other new gallery function will also be a big help for a lot of our users — you can now add new images to a gallery after you initially create it. Just use the form attached to every gallery displayed on your dashboard:

And on the success page, you’ll be able to add as many more images as you want, just like during the original upload process.

Search Your Files

The next feature will be a big help for the many of you who are uploading dozens or hundreds of files to your accounts. Using the form at the top-right of the new dashboard, you can quickly search the names of all your files. So if you’re looking for all your Word documents, search for “doc”, or if you want a specific file, search for part of its name.

The results page hooks you up with everything in your account that matches your search terms.

Nice! It’s been a fun night of upgrades so far, and tomorrow you can expect an even bigger one: support for file privacy. You’ve been using DivShare to upload and share more than 48,000 files in the past month, and with private files, you can expand your use of the site to include stuff you don’t want the world to see. It’s a great place to put your backups, personal documents, and anything else that you need to access quickly and easily online. Keep your eye on the blog for more updates in the next 24 hours, and in the meantime, post your comments about the dashboard upgrades right here.

Hi - excellent work for the addition to manage gallaries. I was also wondering if you had something to add “comments” to each picture … for example after I upload a picture, I can add a comment at the bottom of the picture when it is viewed so I can enter something like “That me wishing you where here with me…” or something to that nature. Thanks.

Where does one access the 400×400 pixel version? I must be being blind - I cannot see it!

I think I just discovered the answer to my own question!

The 400×400 pixel size only appears on NEW uploads but not on files which had been uploaded prior to this modification!

    A “glitch” -

What seems to happen now if one adds an image to an Album created prior to these updates -

If one goes to the Album via the New upload - none of the original thumbnails are visible.

If one goes to the Album via one of the original files - the thumnail for the New upload is not visible.

[…] Oh, one more thing! Tomorrow they will be adding the support for file privacy.  It will be interesting to see how the privacy feature will work.  I would assume that you’ll need to be logged-in to download the file.  It will be perfect for anything you’d rather the public not have access to, like personal documents and backups. Nice site, so far. I just created my account. One question. Can we create folders? If not, will this feature be available anytime soon? Thanks!

I like the new features, however, I was wondering if it would be possible to add a couple more features like being able to add a widget to the links so when people see the link they see it as an icon aka widget, it’s a feature another site I used to use has but this site is way better, the other feature I was wondering about was, is there anyway to possibly access a list of the downloaders, mainly what part of the world or particular country they are being downloaded from, it’s a helpful thing for people like me who use this site for getting music demo’s to the masses, if I knew where the downloads are coming from I could hit the other places that have downloaded less much harder.

Nice stuff. I wonder if “Galleries” could work like folders, or if they are just limited to images. Love to see new features, keep up the great work!

    Hiya guys,

First, Thank you for having a great site here! You are doing a wonderful job and I have been singing your praises everywhere to everyone.
The Upgrade is real nice, I especially like the Gallery upgrade..nice job!

Sites like these really help. I for one (and probably others too) have limited space to store files, and having a place like this…well, its invaluable!

Thank you so much for all you are doing!

Support for file privacy? It’s a little more than the next day but I don’t see it yet. Uploaded a file just to test it. Is there a way to delete a file I uploaded? Or, at least to remove it from my list?

The gallery concept is definitely a step in the right direction. Being able to name the galleries and have a link that you could pass along to someone for the actual gallery instead of just a file in the gallery would be nice. Being able to create groups of galleries for which you could pass a link to the group file instead of a separate link to each gallery would also be useful. Having a list of the galleries on the dashboard page instead of the galleries and all their content would help in that you might not need to scroll through multiple pages just to find the gallery in which you wanted to upload your files.

Quite frankly, I suspect that a lot of us would just like for it to act like a web server that we could use whichever way we wanted.

Personally, I would like to see a better upload procedure so that I don’t have to select a single file at a time. Uploading a tar file containing all the files for a single gallery would be a good step towards providing this feature.

If someone wants to delete their account, there should be an option on the profile page for it.

I noticed that even though I have the pictures numbered consecutively and uploaded them in that order, the gallery does not always arrange them in that order. It might look like: 1, 2, 3, 5, 4, 6, 7, etc. Would be nice to be able to reorder them.

I, also, would like to add a comment under the photos in the gallery.

  14. Jeremy Says:

It’s wonderful that divShare say that files can stay online forever! But I certainly agree with Walter that the user ought to be able to delete files they no longer wish to be stored - or indeed delete a whole account (maybe for the latter one simply e-mails support?).

One odd thing I noticed - initially Galleries will be displayed in the reverse order to being created (i.e. most recent at top).

However if one adds a file to an earlier Gallery it suddenly leaps to the head of the list. It can be very confusing as to which Gallery is which as they keep changing places - probably be better if they stayed in order of initial creation (especially as they are still currently un-namable!).
